As John records this gospel he wants us to know that Jesus’ death was no accident or failure. He is in complete control throughout his entire betrayal and arrest, and succeeds in his goal. John has intertwined Jesus’ story with that of his disciples, particularly Peter, who is also on trial as well but fails at every turn. He has no idea what’s going on here and at each point he falls short.
