While Paul meditates on Christian spirituality that has gone wrong; dependence on the flesh rather than Christ, the pursuit of personal righteousness rather than faith in Christ, rejection of the cross rather than the embrace of the cruciform life. For Paul - Christ was not just a new friend or deity he picked up to give his life added value. His relationship with Christ became an all-consuming passion. While Paul addresses the uncertainty of his fate, he admits that he is full of thanksgiving, hope, and joy, because the gospel is spreading unabated, and it has been propelled by his chains. Paul was focused on giving his readers confidence and hope in the unstoppable gospel. Paul now challenges the Philippians not to shrink back in intimidation and hesitation, but to move forward in hope and joy, working together as one community in the good fight of faith. He calls them to fearless obedience to the gospel, but he first affirms the necessity of humility and unity, in which Christ is our perfect example. One Bible scholar notes how the life of Moses presents a series of striking antitheses: “He was the child of a slave, and the son of a queen. He was born in a hut, and lived in a palace. He inherited poverty, and enjoyed unlimited wealth. He was backward in speech, and talked with God. He was the giver of the Law, and the forerunner of Grace. He died alone on Mount Moab, and appeared with Christ in Judea. As we move into this summer at Southview, we are in a season of transition: between what has been and what is yet to be. Each of us walks through seasons like this in our personal lives as well - times that can feel like “waiting places,” times that are “in-between.” One of the terms for these seasons of transition between one stage and the next is “Liminality.” So what do God’s people do in liminal times like these?
