In our latest in the series 'Letters from Lockdown', Ben preaches from Philippians 4 10-13 on Paul's secret of contentment. In this passage Paul teaches us that contentment comes from the worth of knowing and loving Jesus. Society today takes the very self-centred view that God can only exist if he gives us what we want in life, such as money, and success, believing these things to be the source of true happiness. But these verses in Philippians are teaching us a different way to live. In verses 12 and 13 Paul says: “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation…. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Paul is here talking about the strength we need to be content in Jesus, to experience his peace and not to be anxious. It’s not a passive tranquilising contentment. It’s the life-giving contentment which brings the peace of God to Christians as they strive to live for Christ day by...

  • Pray + Think + Practice = Peace

    19/07/2020 Duración: 28min

In our latest in the series 'Letters from Lockdown', Tom takes us through Philippians 4:1-9. In this passage Paul urges his readers to meditate on the truth of the gospel through their current situation. Today we are going to focus on verses 8 and 9 of Philippians chapter 4. The message in these verses follows on naturally from what we were considering last week on the topic of anxiety. In 2004, a film producer called Morgan Spurlock made a film called ‘Supersize Me’, which charted his self-imposed challenge of eating nothing but McDonalds meals, three times a day, for 30 days and never refusing the ‘supersize’ version if it was offered. The damaging effects of this process quickly showed themselves, and on day 21 Spurlock was advised by his doctor to stop. But he was determined to keep going for the full 30 days. As a result, he not only gained 24 pounds in weight, but he suffered mentally and physically for a pr...

  • Lockdown Anxiety

    12/07/2020 Duración: 31min

Pete preaches from Philippians 4:1-7 in our latest in the series 'Letters form Lockdown'. In this passage Paul spurs on his readers by urging us to take our worries and anxieties to God. God's people are to be marked by peace and joy in him and his salvation. Lockdown Anxiety Cases of anxiety have increased dramatically during the Coronavirus pandemic. And many people who had never experienced anxiety before, now find themselves worrying about many areas of life. Last week’s sermon, in Philippians 3, looked at the topic of Lockdown Lethargy using athletic terms. We were encouraged to get off the sofa and to keep pressing on in our Christian lives, straining towards the finishing line. Here, in Chapter 4 of Philippians, Paul changes the imagery from that of an athlete, to that of a soldier, using a number of military references. First of all, he reminds us that we are in the Lord’s army, and we should...

  • 4 Steps to Deal with Sin

    05/07/2020 Duración: 30min

Ben continues our series 'Letters from Lockdown', preaching from Philippians 3:17-4:7. In this passage Paul gives the church in Philippi practical ways to put the gospel into action in their relationships with each other. In looking at this passage I am reminded of a sermon by Pete Woodcock, in which he suddenly announced that there was one individual present, who was not welcome in the service. This caused a sensation of shock amongst the congregation, and I remember, first of all, wondering who that person could possibly be. And then I started to realise that Pete might actually be referring to me. I suddenly felt embarrassed and fearful that my inner sin was about to be exposed to the whole congregation. I am sure there were many of us at that moment, who had the same fear. As it turned out, the ‘unwelcome individual’ that Pete was referring to, was the sin of ‘Pride’ which was the subject of Pete’s sermon that morning. I...
