  I've looked up to Bob Izumi since I was a child. His show inspired my imagination, and I often dreamed of the fish I'd catch next time I was up at the cottage or on a trip to somewhere new. When I was at home though, I could always count on a weekly dose of Bob Izumi's Real Fishing Show. We don't always have the chance to meet the people who inspire us, but as chance would have it, Bob and I connected and sat down to share his story. We'll talk about the early days and the impact his father had on tournament fishing in Ontario, and about Bob's early career. No chat would be complete without talking about the veritable army of Izumi's who are out there making their impact on the fishing industry.     I've been called many things, but Dave Mercer comparing me to Oprah and Sally Jessy Raphael has got to be one of the strangest. When I got the chance to connect with Dave, I expected a great high-energy chat, but it was great getting to see the more thoughtful side of the man. In our last episode, Dave talked about his daughter's diagnosis of autism, something he really hadn't talked about before this interview. He shared some sage advice about keeping perspective and putting on your game face every day, and about how desire and dedication are key to achieving your goals.   Dave Mercer is a man I admire and respect on so many levels. First, he's a man of the people, and while he has a giant personality, he has only the smallest measure of ego. As I spoke with Dave and he revealed more and more of his personal life, and many of his viewpoints on the industry and those trying to carve their niche in it, my respect grew. Dave has not only been one of the most fascinating and lively guests we've had to date, he's also been a big supporter of this show. Were it not for Dave talking up this show, we'd have never had the privilege of sharing the stories of Brandon Palaniuk and Mark Zona.   We've had some incredible guest this year, and our final guest of season one is one of the most recognizable in the entire industry. As a matter of fact, you can draw a line from some of our best guests in season one to this man: Bassmaster Elite Series Emcee and Host of Facts of Fishing, Dave Mercer. Jim is a true man of the people, and always has time to teach a new angler, take a picture with a new friend, and even share his daily routine on social media with those follow him. In just a short time of chatting I found the familiarity of how we talked to be comforting, like talking fishing with an old friend. But, that's Big Jim; he is just that kind of guy.   For folks who grew up in Ontario, there is probably no more well known fishing figure than "Big" Jim McLaughlin. He's not "on the TV" famous, but rather a legendary tournament angler, and huge ambassador not only for Shimano, but for the sport of fishing in Canada as a whole. In Ontario at least, you don't have to go far to meet this gentle giant. Jim spends a great deal of his time speaking to clubs, and appearing at trade shows; he's no spring chicken, but "Big" Jim makes a regular pilgrimage from small town Eastern Ontario to wherever he's speaking next. You've got a unique opportunity to witness my first ever talk with Jim. I'd never met him, and admittedly, didn't know as much about him as I probably should have.     For the first time we've got a junior angler on the show. Trent Lawson hails from North Carolina, and fishes local tournaments and with a highschool team out of Patrick County Virginia. We've had pros at the highest level of the sport on the show, so it only makes sense to share the stories of the young folks out there who are working up through the ranks to live the dream. Trent, and his partner Jo, recently qualified for the state championship in a BASS sanctioned tournament; they win big there, and it's on to Nationals. I caught up with Trent first a few months ago; well before he and partner Jo placed second in the qualifier for the state championship.     Dr. Bruce Tufts is one of the most fascinating guests we've had on the show to date; and that's saying a lot considering some of the folks we've talked to. This week, is one of my favorite shows, for the love of science and understanding the impact we as anglers have on the environment we relax in. We'll start the conversation with a look at the work Bruce and team have been doing in the Bay of Quinte. Bruce shares with us some of the more important findings they've had in their time tagging and tracking fish in tournaments and casual fishing.  This leads us into a discussion about the necessity of returning large breeding fish back into the fishery to ensure future resources.   Doctor Bruce Tufts is not a household name. You won't see this man splattered across the front page of Bassmaster, nor will you see him in that publication. However, he is probably contributing more for the sport of fishing than we will ever know. Bruce is a professor at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. This man heads up the Fisheries Conservation Lab there, and is one of the most well known and well respected figures in Canadian sport fishing. Bruce was kind enough to take some time out of his hectic schedule to talk fish with us. Not just talk fish, but to really dig in and explain a great deal about his work, that of his students, and what the work he does really means to us anglers.   The man himself from Mikey Balzz Fishing is on the show this week and next! One could probably say that for many, Lake Okeechobee is a Mecca of bass fishing. For those who don't live there, it's a guaranteed 'bucket list' destination for massive bass.   Mark Zona and pal Greg Hackney did something that no one has done before: A live fishing show broadcast uncut and uncensored. On March 14th 2017, Mark and Greg went live from Grosse Savanne in Louisiana to share with us four solid hours of fishing, mirth, and merriment. We caught up with Mark mere weeks before this big event, and got the chance to sit down with the man and get to know him better. As we typically do, we learn about Mark's early years, and how he got into fishing. We'll follow Mark from the Chicago suburbs, rural Michigan, to "god's country" Indiana where he makes his home today. Mark tells us about his days fishing tournaments (and winning them), selling boats for Ranger, and how he fell into a fantastic career when ESPN came calling.     We had a chance to catch a recap of Cherokee, discuss the preparation that goes into the next event at Okeechobee, and this week we've got Brandon Palaniuk back on the show to let us see the Elite Series event on Okeechobee through his eyes. Brandon relates his experiences in practice, and talks about the conditions in the area, including recent events that may have affected the area. We take a look at what Brandon's game plan was, and how he adapted when it wasn't coming together. Brandon admittedly avoids "fishing in a crowd" and we speculate on how that may have affected his game plan. We transition into the event itself, and how Thursday and Friday inevitably saw Brandon outside of the cut for the rest of the weekend. We get a good look at the thought process of an Elite Series angler who has to change their game plan after a tough first day.   Being a journalist of sorts, I truly enjoyed the chance to talk with a real pro like Don Barone. Despite usually being the interviewer, Don was very casual and comfortable to talk to, and was quite candid with some of his answers. In this episode, we'll chat a little more about how the game has changed in journalism as the internet has developed. News travels fast in the new world of information, but that is a place where a man like Don is separated from your typical columnist; you can't just google the story of "Joe the sewing machine repairman"; you have to sit down with Joe, let him tell his story, and you share that story with others. I ask Don to share some detail on his visit to the St. Croix rods factory, and the inspiration for his article on meeting "the people" at the information booth at the Bassmaster Classic. I sat down to chat with award winning writer Don 'DB' Barone, and it was nothing short of magic. It's intimidating interviewing a man who has literally interviewed every professional angler you can name, and counts many among his dearest friends, but for a self-professed "Northern Yankee Hippy" with a sordid past, he is the most down-to-earth unpretentious man you'd ever want to chat with. We talk about Don's early years as a Crime columnist, and how ESPN was instrumental in transitioning him into writing about the outdoors. Don shares some frank advice for those who are considering a career in writing.
