Demolition permits were filed in March for the property at 23-11 43rd Avenue, three blocks from the Queensboro Plaza subway station. Based on the average unit size of 898 ft2, rentals are likely. Handel Architects is the architect of record for the concrete-based structure, which would also provide 42 enclosed parking spots. A construction timeframe has not been announced. According to the state auditors, more than half of the 18,000 conveyances – mostly elevators and escalators – were not inspected in 2018. Thousands of the units had not been inspected for two to three years, and three units hadn’t been inspected in more than 10 years. L&I blamed the backlog on a building boom and lack of inspectors. It is Oracle's 31st acquisition since 2004. The deal was transacted by Oracle Vice President of Corporate Development Craig Jones as the company continues on what it calls an "aggressive national expansion strategy." Oracle retains Duncan's staff, including founder Justin Duncan, who is director of the new division, Oracle Entrance. Oracle is cross-training and certifying its elevator technicians to work on the new, combined offering, which is being marketed to airports, hospitals, universities and hotels. Despite a slow global economy, 577 exhibitors filled 45,500 m2 of space in the Messe Augsburg with 21,200 guests from 108 countries, making this the biggest Interlift yet. Many statistics were similar to the event’s last iteration in 2017. However, industry outlook was downgraded this year, from 34% expecting a sharp rise in 2017 to 23% in 2019. Part of Kaiser Permanente’s 20th Avenue Medical Campus, the building has been under renovation for more than 20 years. The most recent challenge the Franklin building faced was that its three elevators were unable to keep up with demand and inadequate to hold stretchers. To address these shortfalls and make way for the new thyssenkrupp elevator, general contractor Adolfson & Peterson craned a partially cantilevered foundation into place, extended the elevator lobby floor slabs and moved an exterior wall to create new elevator lobbies.
