Demolition permits were filed in March for the property at 23-11 43rd Avenue, three blocks from the Queensboro Plaza subway station. Based on the average unit size of 898 ft2, rentals are likely. Handel Architects is the architect of record for the concrete-based structure, which would also provide 42 enclosed parking spots. A construction timeframe has not been announced. (IEE) is expanding its partnership with Don Bosco School in Manila, Cebu and Iloilo to train workers as the Philippines undergoes a continued construction boom, the Manila Bulletin reports. At the Philconstruct tradeshow recently, IEE President Ramoncito Ocampo said the company plans to have three training areas, observing it has already built a training tower for elevator/escalator installers and donated equipment to train students on air-conditioner installation. Don Bosco students are currently learning to assemble scaffolding for elevators, which account for roughly half of IEE's annual revenue. Today’s podcast news podcast is sponsored by elevatorbooks.com: www.elevatorbooks.com WASHINGTON ELEVATOR INSPECTION BACKLOG VIOLATES STATE LAW A state investigation in Washington recently discovered that the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) has not been complying with the state law that requires inspections of every elevator and escalator in the state annually, KING5 News reports. According to the state auditors, more than half of the 18,000 conveyances – mostly elevators and escalators – were not inspected in 2018. Thousands of the units had not been inspected for two to three years, and three units hadn’t been inspected in more than 10 years. L&I blamed the backlog on a building boom and lack of inspectors. Ltd. inaugurated a new manufacturing facility near Chennai, India, Business Standard reports. The INR4.5-billion (US$63.4-million) facility is the largest in the region at 50,000 m2. The factory is equipped with the latest technology to help KONE improve product quality and delivery time. It is Oracle's 31st acquisition since 2004. The deal was transacted by Oracle Vice President of Corporate Development Craig Jones as the company continues on what it calls an "aggressive national expansion strategy." Oracle retains Duncan's staff, including founder Justin Duncan, who is director of the new division, Oracle Entrance. Oracle is cross-training and certifying its elevator technicians to work on the new, combined offering, which is being marketed to airports, hospitals, universities and hotels. The 2019 iteration, held October 15-18 in Augsburg, Germany, was exemplary of an industry “unimpressed by economic downturns,” they said. Despite a slow global economy, 577 exhibitors filled 45,500 m2 of space in the Messe Augsburg with 21,200 guests from 108 countries, making this the biggest Interlift yet. Many statistics were similar to the event’s last iteration in 2017. However, industry outlook was downgraded this year, from 34% expecting a sharp rise in 2017 to 23% in 2019. THYSSENKRUPP ELEVATOR PROJECT WINS AWARD IN DENVER A project involving the addition of a 1,125-ft2 thyssenkrupp elevator to the Franklin Medical Office Building in Denver was recently honored with the Merit Small Project award by ENR Mountain States for projects under US$10 million, ENR Mountain States reports. Part of Kaiser Permanente’s 20th Avenue Medical Campus, the building has been under renovation for more than 20 years. The most recent challenge the Franklin building faced was that its three elevators were unable to keep up with demand and inadequate to hold stretchers. To address these shortfalls and make way for the new thyssenkrupp elevator, general contractor Adolfson & Peterson craned a partially cantilevered foundation into place, extended the elevator lobby floor slabs and moved an exterior wall to create new elevator lobbies. THYSSENKRUPP ROBOT/ELEVATOR INTERFACE SEEING SUCCESS Successful pilot projects involving thyssenkrupp Elevator North America's newly launched robot/elevator interface have been completed at hotels and hospitals across the U.S. thyssenkrupp said it partnered with leading robot manufacturers on the projects, the locations of which are being kept under wraps. Enabled through thyssenkrupp's TAC controllers, the wireless interface "permits robots to act like human passengers, placing a call for an elevator via WiFi or 4G LTE, selecting a floor and then exiting the elevator upon reaching its destination." The robots can move freely throughout multistory buildings, and, according to thyssenkrupp, promise to enhance efficiency and save on labor costs.
