KONE EXPANDS ITEC WITH NEW INDIAN FACILITY KONE inaugurated a technology and innovation center in the Sangamwadi area of Pune, India, that will serve as an extension to its India Technology and Engineering Center (ITEC) in Chennai, India, Construction Week Online reports. KONE was attracted to Pune due to its emergence as an educational hub that draws students and professionals from India and overseas to research institutes focusing on information technology, management and training. At the Pune center, KONE plans to start hiring engineers and eventually bring more than 120 new employees onboard. Hitachi Elevator Cambodia plans to sell 150 units in 2020 compared with 50 units its first year (2017) and 100 in 2018 as high-rise buildings multiply. The company aims to capture 25% of the highly competitive market by 2021. Cambodia's construction sector, which expanded 6-7% annually over the past five years, is fueling growth. KEY CHANGES IN A17.1/B44, 2019 EDITION The National Elevator Industry, Inc.'s (NEII) newsletter, NEII Insider, listed the key changes in the 2019 edition of the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. More than 100 proposals were approved, with some modifying multiple requirements within the code. They include clarifications to existing sections, updates to existing requirements and the addition of new requirements. There are extensive updates to the requirements for hoistway and car-door locking devices; additional requirements for braking and car-door reopening devices; new requirements pertaining to executable software and two-way emergency communication; changes to enhance and clarify the requirements for Firefighters’ Emergency Operation and use of elevators in emergencies; and updates to the private-residence elevator section and maintenance, alteration and testing requirements. It is scheduled to be published by the end of the year.

NEW ELEVATOR TO EASE ACCESS AT CALIFORNIA HOSPITAL A new elevator system housed in a two-story tower at the Schuman Pavilion at Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) in Loma Linda, California, will ease access by providing a route between a new adult hospital tower and services within the pavilion, according to LLUH, which recently announced the topping out of the steel tower on its website. A LLUH spokesperson tells ELEVATOR WORLD McCarthy Building Co. is the general contractor, and Otis is the elevator contractor. The tower rises from an elevator pit to the east of the pavilion and is connected to the new hospital’s second floor via a 114-ft-long pedestrian bridge. Hitachi Elevator (China) Co., Ltd. officials were presented the honor on September 10 to coincide with the elevator going into operation. Part of a 151-unit order, it travels more than 440 m from the hotel lobby to the 95th floor in approximately 42 s. Hitachi has a deep history in Asia, where in 1968 it debuted what was the fastest elevator in Japan at the time, traveling 300 m/min. Kerkhoff, who replaced Heinrich Hiesinger in 2018, has been under pressure from the company's board, which felt he was moving too slowly in organizing the sale of the units. thyssenkrupp sent letters to potential buyers of the elevator unit earlier this year, including other OEMs and several private equity firms. KONE has expressed interest in a full merger, but Kerkhoff signaled that he preferred to sell a minority stake to a private equity firm and, thus, avoid the kind of competition regulations that killed an effort to create a joint venture between thyssenkrupp's steel business and India's Tata Steel Ltd. Welcoming Bill Kapr and Alkap customers to the team, DiPaolo stated: "Construction and modernization are still booming, and this [acquisition] keeps our maintenance in line with our growth [in the area]." Coles has some 20 years of management experience in the VT industry, beginning in service sales and business development with Schindler in 1998. From 2003 to 2012, he held several progressive management positions at Schindler and was appointed president of Schindler Canada in 2012. He also served as Schindler’s North American vice president, Modernization. From 2015 to 2018, he was vice president, Central Region, at thyssenkrupp Elevator. Coles, who will report directly to EHC President and CEO Jeno Eppel, holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa and a BA in Political Science from McMaster University
