    KEY CHANGES IN A17.1/B44, 2019 EDITION The National Elevator Industry, Inc.'s (NEII) newsletter, NEII Insider, listed the key changes in the 2019 edition of the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. More than 100 proposals were approved, with some modifying multiple requirements within the code. They include clarifications to existing sections, updates to existing requirements and the addition of new requirements. There are extensive updates to the requirements for hoistway and car-door locking devices; additional requirements for braking and car-door reopening devices; new requirements pertaining to executable software and two-way emergency communication; changes to enhance and clarify the requirements for Firefighters’ Emergency Operation and use of elevators in emergencies; and updates to the private-residence elevator section and maintenance, alteration and testing requirements. It is scheduled to be published by the end of the year.

    NEW ELEVATOR TO EASE ACCESS AT CALIFORNIA HOSPITAL A new elevator system housed in a two-story tower at the Schuman Pavilion at Loma Linda University Health (LLUH) in Loma Linda, California, will ease access by providing a route between a new adult hospital tower and services within the pavilion, according to LLUH, which recently announced the topping out of the steel tower on its website. A LLUH spokesperson tells ELEVATOR WORLD McCarthy Building Co. is the general contractor, and Otis is the elevator contractor. The tower rises from an elevator pit to the east of the pavilion and is connected to the new hospital’s second floor via a 114-ft-long pedestrian bridge. Hitachi Elevator (China) Co., Ltd. officials were presented the honor on September 10 to coincide with the elevator going into operation. Part of a 151-unit order, it travels more than 440 m from the hotel lobby to the 95th floor in approximately 42 s. Hitachi has a deep history in Asia, where in 1968 it debuted what was the fastest elevator in Japan at the time, traveling 300 m/min.
