    The human experience is complicated. At times it can feel like we are being pulled in multiple directions, as if we are of two (or many) minds. I recently thought this was expressed perfectly on one of my favorite TV shows, Project Runway (US version). In the midst of struggling with choosing her creative direction one of the contestants, Victoria Cocieru, said “In my brain I have a thousand little brains and they are fighting with each other.” It can be hard to take action or create a space for healing when we are of so many minds. Alan Davidson was the perfect guest for a discussion of how humans can simultaneously be pulled in many different directions. I am a big fan of parts work and in this conversation Alan shares his unique and powerful work with archetypes, and we explore how it intersects with and complements parts work.     In my mind there are three main reasons why we tap. The first is for emotional first aid. This is the tapping we do in the moment to help us when our emotions feel overwhelming. The second is for clearing hurtful memories and limiting beliefs. I group these together because they are often intertwined, with painful memories being a common root cause of limiting beliefs. By tapping to clearing these we can create space to make better choices day to day. The third is for building emotional resilience so that we are better able to cope and adapt when life doesn't go as planned. Being emotionally resilient doesn't mean our lives will be perfect, but instead means we are able to handle adversity or set backs so much better. This third reason for tapping is often overlooked because it is not about responding to something that is happening, but instead about developing a new way of responding to events and circumstances.     Most of us are familiar with thinking of fear in terms of flight or flight. In reality, fear shows up in many different flavors. There are active and passive responses to fear, as well as engaging and disengaging actions. An understanding of the different ways in which fear shows up in our experience serves us in two ways. First, it helps us to understand when we are feeling fear. I know that sounds weird, but we often experience fear without realizing it.
