Michelle Grace Hunder speaks with Music Love's editor Julie Kerr about her career as one of the world's best hip-hop photographers, and also the founder of an all women in music portrait and documentary series called Her Sound Her Story. In this episode, Michelle demonstrates how well-versed she is in all things hip-hop from artists from around the world, but especially here in Australia. Growing up as a huge fan of the genre, a few years ago, she noticed a that there were sub-groups of hip-hop in Australia that didn't fit neatly into the then popular category of Oz hip hop - acts like The Hilltop Hoods, for example -  and wanted to shine a spotlight on other artists. As she started taking photos thanks to childhood buddy from her hometown of Shepparton Victoria, Briggs, things led to the self-publishing of a book called Rise which is a wonderful archive of 180 Australian artists. Meet Vanessa and Arna Rogers. You will fall in love with their faces, their voices, their youthfulness, and their joy. Going by the stage  name No Frills Twins, their music is modern, poppy and fresh, and the tones their voices produce are so warm and hark back to the 80s. The pair created a YouTube channel in 2012 when they were 17, living in their hometown of Lismore. Arna and Vanessa have ended up being huge internet stars Indeed, you would be hard-pressed to find fault in their musical and artistic sensibilities. The twins have toured with Sheppard and the Veronicas, are admired by Boy George, they were featured in Teen Vogue in 2014 before any real traction from their YouTube channel, but simply because of who they are. And Vanessa and Arna are very, very special.  They direct all their film clips, have a huge say in the production of their music, style themselves and each other, and are currently studying a course in accounting to get a handle on their music business. Leanne de Souza has been a manager for nearly 20 years. She is from Brisbane and was booking and touring  artists internationally in the 90s with a phone and a fax machine - back when the music scene in Brisbane was virtually non-existent. She has managed acts like Kate Miller Heidke, Thelma Plum, The Medics, Katie Noonan's band George, and more. She ended up leaving artist management behind in 2015 which was a huge moment in her life. Now she is studying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, and has become a wonderful advocate for indigenous artists. Leanne is also a board member of the Queensland Performing Arts Trust and while she's not managing artists anymore, she is the the Executive Director of the AAM which is the Association of Artist Managers in Australia. Jessie Cunniffe is a music reviewer who has been providing album reviews for five years for the Sydney Morning Herald, and more recently, Rolling Stone Australia. Jess is from the Blue Mountains, NSW and one day when she was 19 years old and at the University of Western Sydney, she attended a lecture with Bernard Zuel who is the music editor for the SMH. She handed him a music review of Missy Higgins" album The Ole' Razzle Dazzle, which had been published in a local newspaper. He took it home, read it and invited Jess to be one of his reviewers. In this conversation with Julie Kerr, Jess discusses the art of music reviewing and her thoughts on the future of music journalism. Danielle McGrane is originally from Dublin, Ireland. Growing up around music, and landing a job with the iconic Hotpress magazine set the foundation for a career in music journalism. 7 years ago, Danielle arrived in Sydney landing a job with the Australian Associated Press (AAP). Eventually she became AAP's Entertainment Reporter covering everything from the ballet to live music to red carpets to orchestras to all things television and movies. Danielle's passion for Australian music has grown and each week you can also find her presenting on The Right Note which is a web-based television show.
