Sinopsis

Radaptations is the podcast where we read books and watch their movie adaptations! Your hosts Ginny and Bridget read and watch adaptations of all sort, rad and bad alike!

Episodios

  • Ep 47.5: Dune (2021)

    25/03/2022 Duración: 58min

We continue our conversation about Frank Herbert’s classic novel with the 2021 adaptations Dune directed by Denis Villeneuve starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem. You’ll hear Bridget have a crisis of face in contemplation of how and why Jason Momoa was created while Ginny considers the sea-worthiness of space crafts. Prepare the bagpipes and boil the ham water… Usul has called a big one. Stay tuned for an episode on The Virgin Suicides, and keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations.

  • Ep 47: Dune (1984)

    17/03/2022 Duración: 01h20min

Inhale some spice and get ready for the sandworm ride of your life, because we read Frank Herbert’s 1965 epic Dune and it’s 1984 adaptation written and directed by David Lynch. We get into the genius that is Herbert’s groundbreaking and genre-bending novel before trying to make sense of Sting in a space diaper. The confusion kicks off with Virginia Madsen’s disembodied head giving us a lot of exposition and things go down dune hill from there. Stay tuned for an episode on the 2021 Dune (the Radaptations debuts of Jason Momoa *and* Oscar Isaac?!). • 6th Annual Raddy Awards!

    17/01/2022 Duración: 53min

Happy New Year from the Radaptations sisters! We’re ready to say goodbye to 2021 by looking back on all the titles we read and watched last year. In this episode, you’ll be treated to some non-adaptation book and movie recommendations before we award the annual Raddies to the best and worst titles from our canon. If you’re reading and watching along with us, prepare yourself for Frank Herbert’s DUNE dropping in February 2022. Books recommended in this episode: Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily & Amelia Nagoski; This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone; The Only Good Indian and My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones; The Changeling by Victor LaValle; and The Housewives: The Real Story Behind the Real Housewives by Brian Moylan. Movies recommended in this episode: Free Guy, Belfast, Spencer, Pig, and Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

  • Ep 46.5: Pool Party Exorcism

    20/11/2021 Duración: 45min

We will not **BE SILENT** about The Exorcist, as we continue our conversation by bringing you our picks for scariest books and movies of all time! Recommendations include: The Blair Witch Project, The Ring, Hereditary, Session 9, Annihilation, The House Next Door, House of Leaves, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Ginny also crushes a quiz that asks her to identify: exorcism movie, movie starring a cast member from The Exorcist, or fake movie that Bridget made up. Thank you for another wonderful year of Radaptations—we'll return in January with the 6th Annual Raddy Awards!

  • Ep 46: The Exorcist

    29/10/2021 Duración: 01h13min

Grab your crucifixes in an extremely non-sexual way and get ready to experience the horror of The Exorcist! We read the 1971 novel by William Peter Blatty and watched its 1973 adaptation directed by William Friedkin starring Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Jason Miller, and Max von Sydow. A surprisingly faithful adaptation, we discuss the merits of having the original author adapt their own work for the screen and definitely give thanks and praise for head-spinningly hot priest Jason Miller. Get ready to have your ass spooked clean off with this one as we wrestle with demons! • Ep 45.5: Adam Driver is From the Future Though

    24/10/2021 Duración: 50min

We're back with a minisode on The Talented Mr. Ripley where we spend an inordinate amount of time recasting the 1999 film, and some of our picks are... absolutely maniacal. We also discuss villains we root for (which reveals quite a bit about us, maybe? but like, in a bad way?), where you'll hear Ginny have a crisis of conscious in real time as she works through Hannibal Lecter's moral code. Bridget then takes a Philip Seymour Hoffman centric quiz—pour one out for a real one! Stay tuned for our next episode on The Exorcist, out soon! • Ep 45: The Talented Mr. Ripley

    11/10/2021 Duración: 01h31min

We’re continuing our streak of talking about boys on boats with Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel and its 1999 adaptation The Talented Mr. Ripley directed by Anthony Minghella starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. A rare gem in that the book and the film are wonderful but for very different reasons, you’ll hear us talk about the relatability of our main character Tom Ripley (despite him being a little Norman Bates-y) as well as the Italian Riviera fever-dream that is Jude Law’s tan. Of course, this episode wouldn't be complete without fanfare for the return of our inaugural Radaptations Beef Boy, Matt Damon, who is giving Lean Turkey Boy in this film. • Ep 44.5: Deep Blue Sea

    07/08/2021 Duración: 01h11min

Today we're taking a deep dive (see what we did there) into the land of super-smart sharks with spiritual successor to Jaws, 1999's DEEP BLUE SEA directed by Renny Harlin starring Saffron Burrows, Tom Jane, LL Cool J, Samuel L. Jackson, and a parrot. We have an extended discourse about the digestive capabilities of parrots, the anti-smoking subtext of the film, and the unethical terms of Tom Jane's parole. Of course, this episode wouldn't be complete without a close reading of the lyrics to the film's theme: Deepest Bluest (Shark's Fin) by LL Cool J—who, just so you know, is dressed as a sea slut leather daddy in the music video. Stay tuned for our upcoming episode on The Talent Mr. Ripley. • Ep 44: Jaws

    09/07/2021 Duración: 01h25min

No summer would be complete without the Radaptations sisters’ deep dive into JAWS, both the 1974 novel by Peter Benchley and its 1975 adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg. It’s the summer of boys on boats, and we’re chumming the waters with Roy Scheider’s fascinating face, Richard Dreyfuss’ chest hair, and Robert Shaw’s… whole deal. This episode is PACKED with trivia on the book and film, complete with a dramatic reading of a bitchy letter Peter Benchley sent to the filmmakers. Grab your sunscreen, floaties, and beach towel… this is a super-sized episode (just like Jaws’ jaws, which we're told are enormous). Stay tuned for an episode on spiritual successor to Jaws, DEEP BLUE SEA. • Ep 43.5: An Image That Could Heal a Nation

    24/06/2021 Duración: 46min

Here we are, talking about Wild Mountain Thyme as our obsession with Jamie Dornan persists, baffles, and continues to generate buzzzzz. If you don’t want this film spoiled for you (and you absolutely want it spoiled for you), skip ahead about 7 minutes into the episode. We do a quick Oscars recap before discussing some of our favorite David Fincher films. Ginny then takes a quiz on Radaptation alums who have appeared in David Fincher films! Stay tuned for our upcoming episode on JAWS. Keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations, and be sure to check out other women-hosted movie podcasts in the Lady Pod Squad Network by following #LadyPodSquad.

  • Ep 43: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

    04/05/2021 Duración: 01h27min

What kind of maniac would make a film in which Brad Pitt’s natural visage is not showcased in all of its glory but instead we have to look at a CGI wrinkle-puss for at least an hour and a half?! We’re back with our discussion about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1922 short story The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and its 2008 filmic adaptation starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, directed by David Fincher. You may be surprised at some of the trivia you learn about F. Scott Fitzgerald in this episode, and of course you can expect an extended discourse about the various watercrafts that Brad finds himself aboard in this movie. Show us your dinghy, Brad! • Ep 42.5: Super Mario Bros.

    05/03/2021 Duración: 58min

There are no words to describe the experience of 1993's Super Mario Bros., but we attempt to make sense of it all in the continuation of our celebration of Bob Hoskins. You'll hear Ginny express herself the best she knows how in her ire for the lack of connection between the source material and the movie. You'll hear Bridget compliment the charism and charm of Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. You'll hear them both question the version of human anatomy presented in the film. If you’re reading and watching along with us, make sure to tune in for our episode on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button dropping in April. Keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations, and be sure to check out other women-hosted movie podcasts in the Lady Pod Squad Network by following #LadyPodSquad.

  • Ep 42: Who Framed Roger Rabbit

    31/01/2021 Duración: 01h17min

We’re starting 2021 off with a bang as we discuss the 1981 novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit by Gary K. Wolf and it’s 1988 filmic counterpart Who Framed Roger Rabbit directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring acclaimed thespian Bob Hoskins. If you’re able to wade through all of the talk about Bob Hoskin’s cake that he’s serving us, you’ll find a deeply analytical discourse about the car lobby in 1940’s L.A., self-loathing as a prerequisite of fascist ideologies, and the moral politics of weapons of mass destruction. Yes, dear listener, this episode will take you down many unexpected Roger Rabbit holes. Stay tuned for a minisode in which we discuss another Bob Hoskins property, 1993’s Super Mario Bros.: The Movie. • New Year’s Special: 5th Annual Raddy Awards!

    31/12/2020 Duración: 53min

Happy New Year from the Radaptations sisters! We’re ready to bid farewell to 2020 by looking back on all the titles we took on in 2020, our Year of the Ladies. You’ll be treated to some very special book and movie recommendations before we reflect on the special moments from our 2020 episodes (mostly Owen Wilson hootin’ and hollerin’ in The Haunting). Of course, we also award the annual Raddies to the best and worst titles from our canon. If you’re reading and watching along with us, make sure to tune in for our episode on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (yes, this is an adaptation) dropping in February 2021.

  • Ep 41.5: The Haunting (1999)

    31/10/2020 Duración: 01h02min

Where do we even begin with 1999’s The Haunting, in which Owen Wilson’s head gets bonked off and goes flying through the air while Lili Taylor softly says "oh no.” In this episode, we’ll talk about the ethics of human subjects research, the value of vanquishing a ghost grandpa to hell, and an anagram of Michiel Huisman that is so stupid we can’t help but continuously return to it throughout the episode. We are on break until January 2021, but keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations, and check out other women-hosted movie podcasts in the Lady Pod Squad Network by following #LadyPodSquad.

  • Ep 41: The Haunting of Hill House

    21/10/2020 Duración: 01h24min

We read Shirley Jackson's universally loved 1959 gothic novel The Haunting of Hill House and watched its 2018 Netflix adaptation masterfully helmed by Mike Flanagan. We get into the business of terror versus horror, repressed queerness, and of course FOOD, before discussing all 10 episodes of the show. Tune in to hear about our favorite scary moments and which Crain siblings the Radaptations sisters identify with the most! Be on the lookout for our next episode in which we'll discuss the 1999 adaptation titled The Haunting (Owen Wilson gets decapitated in a scene that's not meant to be funny but really, really is). Keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations and check out other women-hosted movie podcasts in the Lady Pod Squad Network by following #LadyPodSquad.

  • Ep 40.5: Danny Glover Says Get a Life

    30/09/2020 Duración: 37min

Join us for a history lesson on the origins of Banned Books Week (September 27 - October 3) and the badass librarian behind its inception, Judith Krug. We also offer some recommendations for movies starring the cast of Beloved before Ginny takes a quiz about ghosts in film! And do we talk about the complicated feelings that arose in 1995 when Casper the friendly ghost was revealed to be Devon Sawa? We sure do! Be on the lookout for our next episode on Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House. Keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations, and check out other women-hosted movie podcasts in the Lady Pod Squad Network by following #LadyPodSquad.

  • Ep 40: Beloved

    31/08/2020 Duración: 01h10min

In today's episode, we dig into the complicated and beautiful novel Beloved (1987) by Toni Morrison and its 1998 adaptation directed by Jonathan Demme starring starring Oprah, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, and Kimberly Elise. We talk all about the sheer genius of Toni Morrison and her treatment of trauma before discussing the film, which makes some Large and Weird Choices™ that we're not so sure work. But also, we want to know: do ghosts pee? Stick around to the end of the episode to find out what title we'll take on next, and keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations. Check out other women-hosted movie podcasts in the Lady Pod Squad Network by following #LadyPodSquad.

  • Ep 39.5: Congrats, It's an Eyebrow

    17/08/2020 Duración: 35min

As we continue our conversation about Marie Antoinette, join us while we journey down the filmography of Sofia Coppola before discussing some of our favorite biopics of recent years (and listeners who know the Radaptations sisters *know* we make time to discuss Amadeus and our boy Salieri). Then, Ginny takes a quiz about Radaptations alum who have played royalty. Be on the lookout for our next episode on Toni Morrison’s Beloved! Keep in touch on Twitter @Radaptations, and check out other women-hosted movie podcasts in the Lady Pod Squad Network by following #LadyPodSquad.

  • Ep 39: Marie Antoinette

    10/07/2020 Duración: 01h04min

This podcast is now and forever exclusively a space for processing the slow motion image of Jamie Dornan on a horse as seen in Sofia Coppola’s 2006 film Marie Antoinette, based on the 2001 biography Marie Antoinette: The Journey written by Antonia Fraser. That’s it. That’s the only show note. Enjoy.
