  • E-commerce with Aloysius Chay

    10/05/2019 Duración: 42min

Aloysius used to play poker professionally. During his formative years, he played poker for close to a decade, spending a few years in Macau. It started off with micro stakes playing for $0.1/0.2 home games and he slowly worked his way up to the high stakes in Macau ($1k/$2k HKD). It was pretty joyous days when he hustled Chinese whales from Mainland China and also crunched numbers using software’s to achieve game theory optimal strategies (GTO) to stay ahead vs the rest of the professionals. Subsequently, there was a great opportunity to move towards a booming industry of e-commerce and he transited over with his partner Galvin. It went fairly well; from a 2-man startup grinding 100 hour work weeks to a tidy 30man+ operation that covers the different departments necessary for e-commerce. He had to do everything in initial stages and slowly that was delegated out to the team handling different departments such as customer support, creative work, media buying, fulfilment and strategy. Currently, He is focuse

  • Cultivating Your Mindset and Preparing for Business Success with Elliot Roe

    03/05/2019 Duración: 54min

Elliot Roe is one of the best mindset coaches in poker, and he helps so many poker players reach the highest levels. As a hypnotherapist and mindset coach, Elliot has worked with many poker players across his career, ranging from low-stakes to high-stakes players. He uses hypnotherapy to help players work through the issues that they bring to the table. There’s a lot of crossover between the self-sabotage that he sees at the business table and the poker table, he points out.   Often, when moving from poker to other fields, people don’t know their strengths. Those who succeed at poker, you have to be highly intelligent and good at problem-solving, Elliot points out today. In fact, the competition is lower in business than in poker. That isn’t to say that the transition will always be easy; the soft skills required in the business world may be a challenge, especially for primarily online poker players.   If that has you concerned, don’t worry; Elliot will dig into some of the common pitfalls that poker players

  • Problem Solving with Fedor Holz

    25/04/2019 Duración: 51min

For those in the poker world, Fedor Holz needs no introduction. After quitting poker a couple years ago, he started dabbling in various things, particularly building a community focusing on an environment of creativity. In poker, he points out, his tendency to lose interest in things he doesn’t feel passionate about in the moment was a good thing. Fedor enjoys and is energized by puzzling out and solving problems, and not so much by the process of actually executing the path that he figures out. A few years ago, he didn’t see the potential for this kind of growth in poker anymore. This made him want to quit in favor of developing other skills rather than just monetizing something that he was already good at. Speaking of skills, one of the most valuable skills that Fedor developed from playing poker is problem solving, he’ll explain today. He chats in our conversation about how he applies to this skill to his current work in consulting, explaining that his ability to connect things allows him to work in variou

  • Assessing Behavior, Reading Tells, & Running a Business with Blake Eastman

    15/04/2019 Duración: 01h03min

After watching Rounders when he was 17, Blake Eastman knew that poker was what he wanted to do with his life. More accurately, he wanted to live the story of Rounders, making enough money with poker to pay for law school. He did so well with poker, though, that he stuck with it instead. After a couple years of playing, he shifted from playing poker to coaching and creating a poker business. Blake is an interesting guest since his transition out of playing poker hasn’t taken him out of the poker world. As he explains, now that he’s a business owner, he’s starting to embody the skills and lessons that he learned from playing poker. He’ll also dig into his challenges now as he transitions from a business focusing specifically on poker to a more general business. Because Blake is a psychology expert, we’ll spend a good amount of time talking about various aspects of psychology in poker. This ranges from everything including the anxiety that people feel while playing poker to reading others’ body language to the t

  • Dan Tsui

    27/03/2019 Duración: 50min

Dan Tsui, CEO at software engineering consultancy and product studio Kyokan, joins me today for this conversation. Before this, he did a lot of freelancing in software engineering. And before that, of course, he was a professional poker player. As he’ll explain today, playing online poker is actually what got him into software to begin with. When I ask Dan about the similarities between poker and business, he brings up a very insightful answer: the intuitive understanding of risk, having an edge, and what it means to exploit that edge. These points, he explains, are difficult for professionals from non-game-playing backgrounds to wrap their heads around in the same way. The biggest differences, on the other hand, involve working as a team player instead of solo. We’ll also dig into mindset, exploring various aspects of the topic of translating a poker mentality into the business world. Dan will share his thoughts on the problems with the mindset of people who play poker while waiting to come up with a busines

  • Fantasy Sports with James Gettinger

    07/03/2019 Duración: 38min

Welcome to “From High Stakes Poker To …”! In this brand-new podcast, we interview former high-stakes poker players who have transitioned into other careers. If you’re ready to learn how the raw intelligence of poker players can function to create (rather than extract) value, or to make that transition, this is the place for you! Today’s guest is James Gettinger, a former high stakes poker player who is now a professional fantasy sports player mostly on DraftKings and FanDuel. He started playing poker in late 2012, and realized he could turn it into his primary income source. In 2014, he transitioned into fantasy sports, and has been doing that ever since. If you don’t know anything about sports, this might sound intimidating or even impossible. Believe it or not, James didn’t know anything about sports either when he got started. As he explains today, knowing about sports is an advantage, but it also comes with biases that might do more harm than good. James and I then transition into talking about the correl

  • “From High Stakes Poker To …” Intro

    07/03/2019 Duración: 14min

Hello there, and welcome to this brand-new podcast! In “From High Stakes Poker To …”! I’m your host, Wayne Yap. In each future episode of the show, I’ll interview a former high-stakes poker player who has successfully transitioned into something else. In case you’re not familiar with my story, I’ve spent the last few years of my poker career playing the highest games in Macau. I realized that I was playing poker to make money, and taking that money to try to make people around me happy, but poker (and focusing on making money) didn’t fulfill me. I’m transitioning out of poker now, and looking for ideas and resources to help me successfully do that. That’s how the idea for this podcast came about! I know I’m not the only one in this situation. A lot of successful high-stakes poker players want to transition into other fields, but there’s not enough information out there on how to do that smoothly and successfully. I believe there’s a lot of raw intellectual power in poker players, but it can be a struggle to t
