  • annual birthday catch-up with Sacha Jones processing grief, loss, and closure

    29/04/2021 Duración: 01h19min

Every year my dear friend Sacha Jones comes back on the podcast around my birthday for a conversation. She is one of the most creative, wise, and gentle people I know and I always love speaking with her. Our annual catch-ups end up being time capsules of what we've learned the past year both from the podcast and from what's happened around us. Like most people, Sacha and I both had a wild year personally and collectively so we unpack the ways we've changed. We cover grief, loss, closure, and leaving new york, but it's not all heavy! We also talk about Sacha getting her photo taken by Bill Cunningham while riding her bike, and more. Show Notes:-Check out Sacha on the Web- Sign up for our LET IT OUT letter to get show notes sent straight to your inbox - Full show notes here Sponsors:- Browse the  Organifi.com shop and use code LETITOUT for 20% off all Organifi products.- Sakara is offering our listeners 20% off their first order when they go to Sakara.com/letitout or enter code LETITOUT at checkout.- Get $15 of

  • but you're still so young, redefining our 30s with kayleen schaefer

    09/04/2021 Duración: 01h42min

This week one of my favorite authors returns. Kayleen Schaefer is a journalist and author of Text Me When You Get Home, she also wrote the bestselling Kindle Single memoir Fade Out. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker, Vogue, and many other publications. Her new book, But You’re Still So Young, is out now. It follows eight people struggling to make the leap to adulthood. It includes sociological research and weaves in her own story. In this episode we talk about how this generation is redefining what it's like to be in our 30s. And how a checklist that sociologists created in the 1950s is no longer relevant, or even possible for many. The checklist was: "finish school, leave home, make your own money, marry and become a parent." We talk about how race, class, and privilege play into the ability and desire to meet these old benchmarks. Plus, we cover Kayleen's writing rituals, how they've changed, her advice to writers, and more. Show notes:- Kayleen's new book, But You're

  • intuitive movement, change, eating disorder recovery, and romance with helen phelan ✨

    19/03/2021 Duración: 01h04min

This week I spoke with my friend Helen Phelan, a body neutral intuitive pilates instructor and founder of digital pilates and mindful fitness platform, Helen Phelan Studio. As an ex-professional dancer and eating disorder survivor, Helen's approach to exercise is based on her lived experience that diet culture keeps people stuck in a bad body image loop that makes them dread movement despite its mood and energy boosting benefits. Her methodology is movement in a non-harmful, post-recovery form. We met when I took a class of hers in NYC and have collaborated on events and digital workshops (available here). She's been featured in InStyle, HuffingtonPost, and Well+Good. When she's not working she is snuggling her rescue pup or hiking in the Catskills. In this episode, we discuss communication, patience, bodies, movement, pilates, eating disorder recovery, romantic relationships, and more. Show notes:- Check out Helen's online platform, Helen Phelan Studio- The Support the AAPI Community Fund to #StopAsianHate-

  • 2020 music, the best part of this year with James McCrae

    17/12/2020 Duración: 02h01min

As our last episode of the year, I thought it would be fun to do a year in review of the music of 2020 with my friend James McCrae. Neither of us are music experts, but we do have similar taste in music and got a lot of comfort out of music this year. It’s been such a strange year and so hard for artists to not be able to tour, and as consumers we miss live shows so much. In this episode we each came with 3 albums we loved this year and talked about songs we listened to on repeat. We also talked about how art is always best when you "go with yourself," as Fiona Apple said in her 1997 speech. And in the vein of being yourself, we end the show with a conversation with Dr. Sophia Kogan about body image, vanity, how our hair defines us, and standards of beauty.Show notes:- LET IT OUT Holiday Workshops!- Connect with James on The Web | Instagram- James' Book- Fiona Apple- Charli XCX- Pitchfork's Albums of The Year Podcast- Waxahatchee- Lilacs by Waxahatchee (Music video feat.
