Hawkeye Report Podcast

We continue our Ready to Report series on the podcast by visiting with incoming freshman Teegan Davis. The defensive back talks about the Hawkeyes adding him late in the recruiting process during the month of December and also a knee injury he sustained during the indoor track season this winter. He updates his health and his expectations for the first year on campus.

Something a little different for the next few weeks. As part of our Ready to Report series, we will be catching up with the Iowa recruits to get their thoughts before they arrive in Iowa City. First up in this series is one of the early commits, Leighton Jones. He discusses the recruiting process that brought him to Iowa, the school that gave him pause before his commitment, and how excited Jones is to get to Iowa City in a few weeks.

We are fortunate to have an XFL champion on the podcast this week. Fresh off winning the XFL title with the Arlington Renegades, Chuck Long talks about the title win and doing it with two of his close friends. Plenty to discuss on what is a bit of an emergency podcast thanks to some pretty significant developments that began over the weekend and officially popped on Monday afternoon. Iowa athletics has a gambling issue among at least 26 student-athletes. Kyle Huesmann joins the pod to discuss it. He talks about how this story started at the baseball game on Friday when star Keaton Anthony was not in the lineup. We rundown what we know and what the fallout might end up being. Then we talk some Iowa baseball heading into the final two series of the season and discuss a pair of commitments on Monday, one for Iowa football and the other for Iowa basketball.

It was a pretty significant day for the Iowa football program, so we had to discuss it on the podcast. Iowa landed top transfer wide receiver target Kaleb Brown from Ohio State. He was a Top 100 player last year. We discuss his impact and the role that Cade McNamara played in being able to land him on his official visit. Does this make Iowa the favorite in the Big Ten West? Then we also talk about a new commitment from the Class of 2024 and give a prediction on another offensive lineman heading to the Hawkeyes. Finally we talk a little NFL Draft and Iowa hoops.

It’s a busy podcast this week. It’s NFL Draft season so we are required to have your good friend Scott Dochterman on the podcast to talk about it. First, we look back at Saturday’s final practice for the Iowa football team. Who might Lisa Bluder be targeting in the portal and how realistic are they? The NCAA title game is in the books and there’s plenty to talk about following the Hawkeyes falling short against LSU on Sunday afternoon. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo look back at the game and the subpar officiating that took place and took away from the game. Then we dive into the Angel Reese and Kim Mulkey issues coming out of the game. We also praise Lisa Bluder and Caitlin Clark for the way they handled the entire situation. It’s a special edition of the podcast with the Iowa women’s basketball team playing for a national title on Sunday afternoon.Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann, who is down covering the Hawkeyes in Dallas, discuss the huge win over South Carolina and how Iowa did it. Then we preview the Iowa vs. LSU game for the national title and what the Hawkeyes will need to do to bring home the crown.

It’s a special edition of the Hawkeye Report Podcast celebrating the Iowa women’s basketball team punching their ticket to the Final Four with a win over Louisville. Kyle Huesmann was in Seattle and fills us in on what it was like to be there to see Caitlin Clark play one of greatest games in NCAA Tournament history. The Iowa women’s hoops team is off to the Sweet 16! They beat Georgia on Sunday at a loud Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann visit about the win over the Bulldogs and how the Hawkeyes were able to move on. We also discuss the Iowa men’s hoops team fall to Auburn and the long list of questions for Fran McCaffery’s team heading into the off-season. Finally, we look back at the Iowa wrestlers finishing second in at the NCAA Championships and the stunning loss by Spencer Lee and then wrap up talking about the 15-3 Iowa baseball team, who swept South Dakota State this weekend.

The NCAA Tournament bracket has been released and the Iowa men’s and women’s basketball teams are included. It’s been a pretty crazy week off the field of play for Iowa athletics. The racial discrimination lawsuit has been settled and it’s a controversial decision. Our good friend Chad Leistikow from the Des Moines Register joins us to discuss his reporting on the story and if Iowa AD Gary Barta could end up being let go from his job. We then discuss the Iowa women’s hoops team as they become a huge national story heading into the NCAA Tournament. What a busy weekend for Hawkeye fans! So busy that Sunday night Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann did a podcast to recap it. We start with women’s hoops and the Hawkeyes winning a Big Ten title. We discuss the greatness of Caitlin Clark and if Iowa is a one seed. Then we talk men’s hoops and the disappointing loss to Nebraska that dropped Iowa to a five seed in the Big Ten Tournament. We then jump to Iowa baseball and their best start since 2015, after a three game weekend sweep. We also talk Iowa wrestling and Spencer Lee and Real Woods winning individual titles and wrap up talking about Iowa football players crushing the NFL Combine.

The Iowa basketball team went on the road and picked up one of their most impressive wins of the season at Indiana. We look back at the win over the Hoosiers and how the Hawkeyes jumped on them early and never gave up the lead. We discuss the great performances by Kris Murray, Tony Perkins, Filip Rebraca, and Payton Sandfort. We also look at Iowa now likely to get a double bye in the Big Ten Tournament and the University of Iowa potentially settling the lawsuit with former football players.

It was a historic day for Iowa baseball and basketball on Saturday afternoon. The Hawkeye baseball team went down to Texas and knocked off #1 LSU by the score of 12-4 and the Hawkeye basketball team rallied from down 10 with under a minute left to beat Michigan State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Kyle Huesmann and Tom Kakert break down both games and the impact that the wins will have on each program and we preview the Iowa women’s game against Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
