As AW Tozer famously said, the first thing that comes into our mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us. How we see God shapes who we live and respond. What comes in your mind when you think of God? How do you see God? In this sermon we explore what it means to rightly see and appropriately respond to God.

In our cultural moment there are many places we tend to find refuge and comfort. Where are you seeking refuge? Where do you turn in difficult times? Psalm 46 is a reminder that God is to be our refuge and that He is ever present - even when all seems chaotic and out of control.

On the surface, Psalm 45 might seem like a strange text. But as we ponder the words of Psalm 45 we begin to see how this Psalm speaks to a deep need and longing we all have. The longing for a king who rules with both authority and love.

When we look around our society and culture, it can seem like God is absent and not working to encourage and support his people. What do we do in those moments? Where do we turn? Psalm 44 is a powerful testimony to the truth that although God might seem absent we can have hope and confidence that nothing can separate him from His loving power.

Even though we might carry doubts and even though are lives might be full of despair, Jesus calls us to himself. Mark 5 demonstrates the beauty of Christ as he responds to those who humbly come to Him even though they might carry doubts, even though He may surprise us, even though He will expect more of us.

In the final chapter of Genesis, we read of the deaths of Jacob and Joseph. And yet the book of Hebrews reminds us that both of these patriarchs died "in faith," looking ahead to God's promised redemption. The good news of the gospel shows us how we can die with a similar kind of faith and hope.

Every human being needs a sense of direction and destiny. In Genesis 49, Jacob imparts a sense of destiny to his sons... and in the process, shows us the future of all of humanity.

As Joseph and his family settle in a foreign land, God graciously provides for them. God gives his people a future-foretaste of the work that he will do in the future. Genesis 47 helps us to see how God's gifts in the present are meant to help us have the right posture for faithful living in the present as we expect and wait for God's complete work of restoration.

Life is a journey, full of twists and turns and unexpected surprises. As Christians, what can sustain us along the way? In this story we explore how Jacob’s journey to see Joseph in Egypt gives us wisdom and insight into what it means to journey with God in life.

Finally, Joseph reveals himself to his brothers. But more importantly, he reveals to them (and to us) the beauty of God's providence. What the brothers meant for evil, God meant for good... and that changes everything.

Have Joseph's brothers changed? Will they leave Benjamin behind in Egypt, or will they intervene? In Genesis 44, we see Judah step forward as a substitute in his brother's place. In this moment, we see what God is doing through Judah, and through Jesus.

In his radical grace, God takes Joseph's family from a place of famine to a bountiful feast. This story invites us to ask honest questions about ourselves, our motives and what we ultimately need and receive as we think about God's work of taking us from famine to feast.

He grew up in a complicated family. He endured betrayal, hardship, injustice, and isolation. Yet in one of the Bible’s most dramatic reversals, Joseph rose to a place of power and authority, delivering God’s people and preserving the covenant family. In this series, we explore Genesis 37-50, following the story of God's providence in the life of a “beloved son" who prefigures a Greater Son to come.

In a dramatic turn of events, Joseph is finally promoted from prison and given a position of prominence under Pharaoh in the midst of famine. Joseph speaks God’s purposes, serves with God’s power and is satisfied with the provision he gives. What might this story have to teach us about the kind of people God partners with?

Seasons of disappointment and darkness challenge our faith. In this story, Joseph finds himself in such a season, utterly alone and forgotten. Where is God in all of it? God is still working in small and creative ways, even through our disappointments and loneliness.
