The origin trilogy of Amazing Friends ends with an incredibly faithful adaptation of Spider-Man’s debut! Our amazing friends have joined us for this three-episode season of Amazing Friends origin stories! We’re celebrating 200 episodes with the very first live-action Spider-Man film – the pilot movie for 1977’s The Amazing Spider-Man series! It’s a strange mixed bag, which includes a good performance by Nicholas Hammond as Peter Parker, a divisive J. Spider-Man’s first ever appearance in live action might not be where you’d expect! We’ve ventured back to the 1970s with the educational children’s sketch comedy show The Electric Company and its “Spidey Super Stories” segments, which pit a silent Spidey who only communicates with word balloons against puntastic comedy villains (including a Dracula played by Morgan Freeman and a cake-sitting Yeti). It’s low-budget silliness and absurdity at its finest! Nichelle Nichols voices Blade's mom, a vampire who shoots a vampire-creating laser beam into a disco ball in a nightclub that turns everyone into vampires. Honestly, what else could you ask for? There’s a ton packed into this fun horror episode that teeters on the edge of camp, while finding closure for Morbius, Terri Lee, and Blade and even functioning as a send-off for Black Cat. It is once again morbin’ time, and everyone’s trying to figure out what to do with this hunky sleepy bat monster! This homage to gothic romance and Universal horror plays up the melodrama and soap opera, with Black Cat and Debra Whitman both fighting for love, a self-loathing Morbius monster just trying to survive, and the bad guys really just getting in the way. You know it’s gonna be bad when the logline is “Black Cat is kidnapped”. It only gets worse in an episode that bizarrely casts edgy queer comedian Sandra Bernhard in a thankless girlfriend role for Scorpion, makes an evil baby the primary villain without being funny enough to pull it off, and backslides characters arcs for no reason. We speculate on what may have happened in the production process to create this mess, and theorize an alternate version centering Black Cat and the other women in the story that might have actually been good. Is it weird that we’re doing an episode of a somewhat forgotten Fantastic Four cartoon that was a joint French/Canadian/American production from the 00s? Maybe!
