The first chapter focused on Paul's situation. While Paul addresses the uncertainty of his fate, he admits that he is full of thanksgiving, hope, and joy, because the gospel is spreading unabated, and it has been propelled by his chains. Paul was focused on giving his readers confidence and hope in the unstoppable gospel. Paul now challenges the Philippians not to shrink back in intimidation and hesitation, but to move forward in hope and joy, working together as one community in the good fight of faith. He calls them to fearless obedience to the gospel, but he first affirms the necessity of humility and unity, in which Christ is our perfect example.
