Beginning in the late 1950s, the United States and Soviet Union expanded the battlefield of the Cold War into near earth space. Seen by both sides as the new "High Ground," space offered an exciting and decisive new set of options for both sides of the East-West conflict, which both moved rapidly to exploit. Initially limited to robotic surveillance satellites, military space programs on both sides quickly began to explore the possibilities of manned spacecraft in the new "High Frontier."
