The past three decades have been a virtual Renaissance for the science of underwater archaeology. Beginning with the discovery of the wreck of the passenger liner RMS Titanic in the 1980s by Dr. Robert Ballard's team, wreck after wreck has been discovered and surveyed, providing amazing details on their history and sinkings. At the same time, the technology that makes these explorations and discoveries possible, has driven the state-of-the-art in underwater exploration, especially in the areas of remote submersibles and sensors.
