Since it's introduction to service in 1981, the F/A-18 has become the very foundation of U.S. Naval Aviation, comprising more aircraft in U.S. Navy carrier air wings than all other types combined. Now in its 4th decade of service and as many generations of evolution, the F/A-18 has been an international sales success, and gone much farther than the modest goals that created the original Hornet strike fighter in the late 1970s.
