Since the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the number of non--profit (usually 501(c) corporations) chartered to support military personnel and veterans has grown exponentially. And while all of these organizations, in theory, attempt to support the noble cause of active and former U.S. warriors, few if any, have the track record and respect accorded to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF). Formed in 1980 in the wake of the failed hostage rescue mission into Iran, which resulted in the deaths of 8 U.S. service personnel, SOWF is chartered to do one very simple mission: to provide educational scholarships for the children of deceased Special Operations Forces (SOF) personnel.
