History tells us that Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy in the spring of 1944, was the largest amphibious operation ever run in the history of warfare. In fact, the largest siege of a fortified area in history, Operation Overlord was an undertaking initially thought impossible by Allied planners when they began to consider invading occupied France in 1942. How would the massive fortifications being constructed at key points along the coast of Europe be overcome? What means, would Allied troops to get over and past the mines and obstacles on the beaches, and move inland? And, since the seizure of a port facility was considered an impossibility on D-Day, how would the massive Allied army being transported to Normandy, be supported and supplied following the initial invasion?  These are just some of the questions that will be considered and answered on the August 26th, 2013 edition of Military Monday, hosted by author and analyst John D.
