Good healthcare is a problem for many Americans, especially if you are poor … and especially if you are in jail. And, of course, it becomes even more complicated if you are a woman and pregnant. One doctor spent six years caring for female inmates at the San Francisco jail. During that time she learned first-hand about the complexities and contradictions of care in a punitive institution.
