“THE TRADITIONAL DATE: WHY IS CHRISTMAS ON DECEMBER 25th?” It’s the most popular Christmas song of the last 100 years – “White Christmas.” Written by Irving Berlin and first sung by Bing Crosby, it’s a song most all of us recognize almost instantly: “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know.” I grew up in Minnesota, and every time I heard that song come on the radio my first thought was, “Well what other kind of Christmas is there? How can it be Christmas if it isn’t a white Christmas?” Then in 1979 I moved to California and I discovered that I was perfectly happy to celebrate a green Christmas. Whether the trees out the window are evergreens covered in snow or palm trees gleaming in the sun, Christmas is still Christmas.
