Num 21:4-9 After the people had turned against the Lord, He sent snakes into their camp as punishment. When the people repented, God provided a way for them to avoid the consequence of their sin, which was death. If they would look with faith upon the bronze serpent lifted up on Moses' staff they would be healed. Jesus referred to this story as an indication of how He would die for our sin.
