God is holy and because He is holy, He must punish sin. But we can now choose whether to receive that punishment ourselves OR to believe in faith God is holy, and because He is holy, He must punish sin. But we can now choose whether to receive that punishment ourselves OR to believe in faith that Jesus bore our punishment for us so that we can be forgiven and free. That act of faith in response to the Gospel opens up a COVENANT relationship with the One True and Living God.
