The western pygmy rattlesnake is Tennessee’s smallest and least know venomous snake in Tennessee. Western pygmy rattlesnakes are listed as threatened by the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, considered rare to very rare and imperiled by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. These snakes are found in a narrow range of habitat following the Tennessee River in west Tennessee. Tennessee State University graduate student Shawn Snider is studying these snakes because very little is know about this species, and they are not very abundant in Tennessee.
