The phrase is a simple one. 1 Timothy 3:2 simply states that a spiritual leader in the church needs to be a “one woman man.” Yet down through church history the phrase has been used to argue that spiritual leadership needs to be celibate—married only to the church, or never remarried after the death of their spouse or that a divorcee can never exercise spiritual leadership in the church.
