  • 3 Strikes, You're Out #26: MiLB Pride with Ben Pereira

    08/05/2020 Duración: 51min

Last week, we talked about how the minor leagues are an essential part of baseball. Today, the focus is on how MiLB is an essential part of baseball's connection to the LGBTQ community. I'm joined by MiLB Specialist for Diversity & Inclusion Ben Pereira (BEQ Magazine's 40 LGBTQ Leaders Under 40) for a great discussion about the exploding popularity of Pride Nights throughout the minor leagues. Before the season went on hiatus, MiLB had scheduled 81(!) Pride Nights in 2020--including "non-traditional" markets like Utah and rural Virginia. Sorry hipsters, it's not just for Brooklyn anymore. Pride is breaking out in baseball towns throughout the country and that's a dose of much-needed good news. Ben and I also delve into what it's like to be a Red Sox fan who came of age without the mental baggage of 1918. As someone who spent 37 years in the shadow of 1908, I'm profoundly envious. • 3 Strikes, You're Out #25: Save the Minor Leagues with Jeff Lantz

    01/05/2020 Duración: 50min

MLB has a plan to eliminate 42 minor league teams. Like most ideas MLB has, this is a very bad plan. For example, MLB once thought the Marlins were a good idea. This is the Marlins of plans. Today, I'm joined by Minor League Baseball Senior Director of Communications Jeff Lantz to talk about this very frustrating issue. We delve deep into the difficult circumstances in which MiLB finds itself--between the pandemic on one hand and Rob Manfred on the other. Jeff and I discuss the minors' vital role in growing the game and creating new baseball fans. You know...the kind of thing that a baseball league SHOULD be embracing. Plus, my beloved Kenosha Twins get a shout-out (and a skypoint)! And Jeff has an amazing story about Kerry Wood's 20 strikeout game... • 3 Strikes, You're Out #24: Cal Ripken and 2131 with Emily Guy Birken

    24/04/2020 Duración: 01h16min

With MLB currently playing no games, this seems like a good time to look back at a guy who played ALL of them. In this episode, author and Orioles fan Emily Guy Birken (End Financial Stress Now) joins me to discuss one of the most classic games of our youth: the night Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record on September 6, 1995. We dig deep on what Cal meant to baseball coming off of the 1994 strike and what he meant to Orioles fans as a homegrown symbol of pride in the city of Baltimore. It was one of the biggest feel good nights in baseball history at a time where everybody needed it the most. Huh...can't think of any comparisons to a single thing going on in present day America AT ALL. Nope. Not a one. This offseason is the only thing that's lasted longer than Ripken's victory lap. ALSO: Emily is doing a really cool thing and offering free financial consultations to anyone who needs one during the coronavirus pandemic. Visit her website for details. 17/04/2020 Duración: 01h13min

We could all use a little positivity right now. And just as a certain Number 23 did for the Cubs in 1982, Episode Number 23 came along at just the right time. Today is all about celebrating Ryne Sandberg, my favorite Cub and the greatest second baseman I've ever seen. Joining me in this tribute to all things Ryno are Sara Sanchez and Andi Cruz Vanecek from the Cuppa Cubbie Blue podcast. Naturally, we fanboy/fangirl out over The Sandberg Game, that sublime day when Ryno simultaneously vanquished the Cardinals, the greatest closer of the 1980s, and Cub demons. We also discuss the consistent excellence of Sandberg's defense, the surprising eloquence of his Hall of Fame speech, and the special moment when he represented the Cubs at Pride. Bruce Sutter should probably skip this one. The rest of you will love it.
