This week we revisit another of our Best Of 2021 interviews. Laura Turner chats with former Victoria Police Detective Sergeant Peter Bellion. In his decades of service within the ranks of Victoria Police Peter was honoured with numerous awards including an Australian Police Medal and the Victoria Police Star. As a crash scene investigator and reconstruction expert with the Major Collision Investigation Group, his work helped to provide answers for grieving families and communities touched by road trauma. But like so many of his fellow first responders, the legacy of his service left deep psychological scars in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder. Laura Turner chats with Laureate Professor Peter Doherty from the The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity. Laureate Professor Peter Doherty (as he himself puts it in his new book) is in the ‘infectious disease and death game’. In 1996 he and a colleague won a Nobel Prize for discovering how our immune cells destroy deadly viruses – it was ground-breaking research that would go on to revolutionise the field of immunology. In early 2020 he was all set to slip into retirement mode when the Coronavirus catapulted the world into chaos and propelled scientists into the battle to protect the community and find a vaccine for COVID 19. For much of her career Bronte has competed alongside of her sister Kate – they made history as the first Australian sisters to compete in the very same event back in 2012 and she has no doubt inspired a whole host of young Australians along the way with her grit and determination.
