THE MUSTACHE was trending in the US over the past week and we discuss why! Harry Styles has grown a quarantine mustache and it is FAB! We discuss the history of mustaches and how they can be political statements, group identifiers (think cops & queer people), and both a way to present masculinity and turn masculinity on its head. We also talk about Niall picking up the ukulele during quarantine (potentially inspired by Julia Michaels) and what songs from Heartbreak Weather and Flicker we would like to hear played on the ukulele. Golden, golden, golden! This week we break down Harry Styles's song Golden, the album opener of his second album, Fine Line. We talk about the dreamy and sunshiney imagery in the versus and how the tingly music parallels these lyrics. We break down the song’s underlying message about the fear of losing your identity in a relationship and the deep loneliness after a breakup. Harry literally makes you read between the lines to see it: “You’re so golden/I don’t want to be alone/You’re so golden.” We also discuss the possibility that Harry’s words are directed, not to a lover, but to a past or other self who is too scared to live freely and authentically.
