Yesterday the IMF said that most of Europe will see a recession this year but most experts think that Ireland may avoid it. It doesn't mean that we’ll have a smooth 2023 or that the coalition government won't have problems. To discuss the economic and political backdrop of the new year, Joe spoke to the renowned economist, academic, author, government adviser, and journalist Colm McCarthy.

2022 was a momentous year for the markets with war and inflation being the two key words which we thought belonged to distant decades. But they're both back. Stock markets were buoyant 12 months ago but would be hammered by the end of the year as interest rates and the cost of everything jumped. So what can we expect this new year? At one point in the first quarter of 2022, house prices rose at a percentage rate in the mid-teens. Rents rose by an astonishing 11% last year. All signs of a booming property market or perhaps even evidence of a bubble about to burst. Given how dreadful cryptocurrencies have performed this year, it’s not difficult to link the words Crypto with manure or poo or other less family-friendly words. But there’s also a practical reason. Mining for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin is very energy intensive since you need whole server farms working 24 hours a day to solve a problem and earn coins. But one company has developed a way of using manure to power that mining. It’s called easy Crypto hunter and Josh Riddett is the founder and joined Joe Lynam on the show.

The definition of quantum computing is that it uses the theories of quantum mechanics to solve complex problems that might stump ordinary computers. However, it requires specialist hardware. Horizon quantum computing is an Irish company initially set up in Singapore but now it’s opening offices in Dublin and is hoping to attract more quantum computing experts. Prof Joe Fitzsimons, CEO of Quantum computing joined Joe on the show this morning.

As we head into Christmas and all the cooking and washing and cleaning involved in that, spare a thought for wasting water this festive season. Irish Water has done a survey which suggests that companies also need to think about conserving water. Just before the summer, the key member states linked to the OECD – including Ireland – agreed that a floor rate of 15% should be placed on corporation tax rates to avoid companies playing one country off against another. Needless to say, this was a major concession from Ireland, where the corporation tax has been solid and steady at 12½% for more than two decades. Now the c, but there are still quite a few hurdles in place and the big companies can still use their size for tax advantages

Joe Lynam spoke to EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola and discussed the looming trade war between the US and the EU.

 Just over a week ago, Belgian police announced that they had arrested 4 people working for the European Parliament in a sting operation looking into bribery accusations. It has shone a very brought light on the world’s largest elected chamber and its president - Roberta Metsola has spent the week fighting fires. She gave only one planned face-to-face interview amid this crisis and that was to Newstalk while Joe was there in Strasbourg last week
