She studied foreign languages at Wayne State University in Detroit. As an educator, Ms. Simpson was recognized as “Michigan Foreign Language Teacher of the Year of 1996”. She retired after 37 years, to become an Andrea Doria historian, working with marine scientists, divers, and survivors. In 2012, she was named honorary member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers for her scientific expertise on the Andrea Doria shipwreck.
