On the show this time, it’s the minimalist-no-rubbish storytelling of singer-songwriter Julia Jacklin. The Aussie songwriter Julia Jacklin composes thoughtful lyrics and spacious arrangements, which in combination with her fresh harmonic choices make for a rewarding listening experience. Her latest album Pre-Pleasure is named for the state we all exist in - the moment right before a mythical state -  where we have arrived, we have done the work, and we can now live in the state of “pleasure.” Problem is - that kind of work is never done, so we remain in this state - pre-pleasure, in perpetuity.  This episode features 3 songs from the new record, one from a Sub Pop Singles Club release, and a bonus from her 2019 in-studio, the epic “Don’t Know How to Keep Loving You” from the album “Crushing.”  Both are available from the Polyvinyl Record Company. On the show this time, it’s the inclusionary joy of London’s Ibibio Sound Machine. Their latest album, ‘Electricity,’ is available on Merge Records. This 8-member multicultural band put out their latest album ‘Electricity’ in March of 2022. Blending elements of West African funk and electro-post-punk, it was produced by saxophonist Max Grunhard in collaboration with Hot Chip. The record highlights singer Eno Williams' adamant vocals, and expands the band's sound - it’s all bangers, ready for the club. This performance features the first 4 songs from the album, though in a different order. The Polish pianist’s latest album, 'On Giacometti,' is out February 2023 on Gondwana Records.  She continues to expand on her film score ambient classical atmospherics, using electronics and her clear wistful voice. In this episode, we touch on Rani's origin story and influences and then get right to the music as these works are a bit longer. This performance features 3 previously unreleased pieces, and one - “Buka” - from her 2020 release, 'Home.' Hayden Silas Anhedönia has been creating music under the moniker Ethel Cain since 2010 but only just finally released her debut full-length Preacher’s Daughter in 2022. Honing in on Southern Gothic themes, her music delves into coming to terms with her hyper-religious upbringing which Troy Nelson details in this episode of Live on KEXP before the Tallahassee-bred musician and model performs a gorgeous rendition of three songs from Preacher’s Daughter and one from her 2021 EP Inbred. Built To Spill have been beloved Boise hometown heroes for over thirty years now and the latest record from Dough Martsch & co., When the Wind Forgets Your Name, continues their legacy of high-quality hooky jangle and dreamy psych-rock. For their most recent in-studio, recorded over the summer, Martsch came in tow with his current three-piece lineup including Prism Bitch’s Teresa Esguerra on drums and Melanie Radford of Blood Lemon on bass.  Troy Nelson details the history of some of the tools Built To Spill uses to create their unique tone and Cheryl Waters chats with Martsch about how the new lineup has inspired him and affected the sound of their live shows. South Seattle-based musician/educator/entrepreneur Jerrell Davis makes laid-back hip hop under the name Rell Be Free. For his KEXP session, Davis brought in a number of musicians from Mead Streat studios, the South Seattle recording studio he runs alongside a bevy of important local artists. In this episode, we hear a bit about the studio's influence on the community and Davis’ intentions for his art before he and his cohorts jump into four songs from his latest album Sow What? Indie rockers and former Tacoma locals Widowspeak released their sixth studio album The Jacket in Spring 2022 as a semi-concept album loosely telling the story a chain stitcher turned New York rocker. Vocalist Molly Hamilton relayed to Cheryl Waters in this episode of Live on KEXP the story behind the album before launching into four dreamy tracks off the record as well as professing their love for radio (which we don’t mind one bit). Instead the heavy topics of racism and xenophobia are handled with humor and wit on the Belgian duo’s debut Topical Dancer and their KEXP in-studio session is a hip-swinging celebration full of wry laughs and groovy basslines.  For an extra dose of international electronic grooves, we also share an excerpt from our 2016 session with Mexico City-based duo Sotomayor. This summer, Minneapolis-based synth-pop band Poliça released their sixth studio album Madness via Memphis Industries Records. When they stopped by KEXP in July to play songs off the record, frontwoman Channy Leaneagh spoke with Cheryl Waters about the incorporation of a new band member of sorts, an anthropomorphic production tool designed by producer Ryan Olson and the sound-artist Seth Rosetter called “AllOvers(c)” which added an eerie element to the band’s icey sound.
