Sinopsis

Reliving a few of our favorite things (movies, TV, music, pop culture) from one of our favorite years. No year is off limits -- especially if we were alive when it happened.

Episodios

  • Episode 14: 1995 - The Net and the NES

    03/09/2015 Duración: 01h12min

Twenty years after the fact, The Net (starring Sandra Bullock) does not exactly shine like a brand new desktop computer. Mike Camerlengo and Zack Verhoff join Matt Stroup to break down everything that makes this film confounding, including a strange pronounciation of the word "modem." Plus, we revisit the Nintendo Entertainment System in all its glory, ranking some of our favorite games from Tecmo Bowl to Legend of Zelda to Super Mario Bros 3.

  • Episode 13: 1985 - Better Off Dead, We Are the World

    21/08/2015 Duración: 51min

Aaron Cohen and Dan Fleschner join Matt Stroup to discuss the impossibly strange film Better Off Dead, starring John Cusack (and co-starring some animated hamburger patties). Plus, a look back to the remarkable song (and video) We Are the World, starring Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and quite a few others (including Dan Aykroyd).

  • Episode 12: 1998 - Armageddon, the Music Industry's Super Tuesday

    11/08/2015 Duración: 01h05min

Mike Camerlengo and Zack Verhoff join Matt Stroup to discuss the wildly overwhelming asteroid apocalypse movie Armageddon (Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Steve Buscemi). Plus, a look back to a day dubbed "Super Tuesday" in the music industry, when Garth Brooks, Method Man, Ice Cube, Seal, Whitney Houston, Jewel and Mariah Carey all released albums on the same day.

  • Episode 11: 1991 - Point Break, Use Your Illusion I and II

    24/07/2015 Duración: 01h01min

Aaron Cohen and Dan Fleschner join Matt Stroup to relive the greatest surfing/ex-president/bank robbery movie ever made: Point Break (Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves). Also during our trip to 1991: a look back to the highly anticipated release of Use Your Illusion I and II, the two albums unleashed on the same day by Guns N' Roses.

  • Episode 10: 1999 - Varsity Blues, Y2K Paranoia

    06/07/2015 Duración: 56min

Mike Camerlengo and Zack Verhoff join Matt Stroup for a trip to West Canaan, Texas, and a full-scale breakdown of the 1999 high school football film Varsity Blues (James Van Der Beek, Jon Voight, Paul Walker, Amy Smart). Plus, a look back to the Y2K crisis that caused quite a bit of fear (and even more spending) during the lead-up to New Year's Eve 1999.

  • Episode 9: 1996 - The Rock, Nas and the Macarena

    26/06/2015 Duración: 01h33s

The Throwback Show drops in on Alcatraz for an in-depth breakdown of the insane action blockbuster The Rock (starring Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery). Plus, a look back to one of the best songs of '96 (If I Ruled the World, by Nas), and depending on your vantage point, quite possibly the absolute worst: the Macarena.

  • Episode 8: 1992 - White Men Can't Jump

    18/06/2015 Duración: 34min

1992 brought us movies such as Basic Instinct and A Few Good Men, but in this episode, The Throwback Show takes a trip to Venice, California, for a look back at White Men Can't Jump (Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, Rosie Perez). Aaron, Dan and Matt revisit topics ranging from Woody and Wesley's basketball skills to a series of odd fashion choices made throughout the film.

  • Episode 7: 1987 - Adventures in Babysitting, the Contra 30-Man Cheat Code

    09/06/2015 Duración: 53min

The Throwback Show drops in on 1987, reliving a strange and harrowing evening on the town with Elisabeth Shue in Adventures in Babysitting. Also, a closer look at everyone's favorite cheat code: the Contra 30-man trick (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, start), the combo of buttons that made an impossible video game eminently winnable.

  • Episode 6: 1979 - The Warriors and the Walkman

    15/05/2015 Duración: 45min

Turning the dial all the way back to the 1970's, The Throwback Show revisits one of the all-time great cult movies: The Warriors, a New York journey from Coney Island to the Bronx and back (and one that oddly reminds Dan of the movie Anchorman). Also in this episode: an ode to the Walkman, a machine that used to play music on something known as a cassette tape.

  • Episode 5: 1990 - Kindergarten Cop, In Living Color, You Can't Do That on Television

    28/04/2015 Duración: 40min

1990 brought us a lot of memorable movies (including Goodfellas and Home Alone), but Aaron, Dan and Matt feel compelled to focus on another 25-year-old classic: Kindergarten Cop, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Plus, a look at two seminal sketch comedy shows: In Living Color, which first went on the air in 1990, and You Can't Do That on Television, which went off the air the same year.

  • Episode 4: 1988 - Big

    15/04/2015 Duración: 28min

Aaron, Dan and Matt fire up the Zoltar machine to revisit the classic 1988 movie Big, starring Tom Hanks. It's a movie Aaron has seen over 100 times, and he has the minutiae to prove it. Plus, a look back to one of the best scenes from The Naked Gun, starring Leslie Nielsen: when Frank Drebin accidentally uses the bathroom at the courthouse while still wearing a wireless mic.

  • Episode 3: 1997 - Grosse Pointe Blank, Austin Powers, Tyson Bites Holyfield

    01/04/2015 Duración: 55min

The Throwback Show makes its first trip back to the late 1990's as Aaron, Dan and Matt relive two of their favorite comedies: Grosse Pointe Blank (starring John Cusack) and the first installment of the Austin Powers movies. Plus, a look back to that bizarre night in June when a much-anticipated Mike Tyson-Evander Holyfield fight ended with Tyson biting off part of Holyfield's ear.

  • Episode 2: 1989 - The Burbs, Batman and Milli Vanilli

    23/03/2015 Duración: 56min

A quarter of a century has not changed this fact: 1989 was an incredible year. Aaron, Dan and Matt revisit one of the year's biggest movies (Batman, Michael Keaton edition), and one further down the list: The Burbs, starring Tom Hanks. (Matt insists it's a classic; Aaron and Dan disagree.) Plus, a look back at Milli Vanilli, and whether we can still enjoy their music even though they weren't singing it.

  • Episode 1: 1994 - Hoop Dreams, Pulp Fiction and Red Dog beer

    23/03/2015 Duración: 55min

On a return trip to 1994, Aaron, Dan and Matt revisit two classic movies celebrating 20-year anniversaries: Hoop Dreams and Pulp Fiction. Among the topics: the high volume of mullets in Hoop Dreams, and what made The Wolf such a genius in Pulp Fiction. Plus, a tribute to Red Dog beer, which may have prevented Matt from attending law school. (Note: When this episode took place, the show was operating under its original title of The Anniversary Show. That title has since been dismissed.)
