1.23 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 11) - Matthew 6:9-13
24/01/2022 Duración: 31minJason Miller - At the center of the sermon on the mount, we find the prayer Jesus taught his disciples to pray. How do we approach prayer as something other than a lever to pull to make things happen, or a duty to perform to earn divine approval? 17/01/2022 Duración: 32minJason Miller - Jesus continues his warnings against public displays of religiosity when he talks about prayer and fasting. What is his concern and what does it mean for those of us who no longer find ourselves in a world with religious expectations? This week's episode also includes an important update on our future church home.* *The pictures referenced in this important update can be found HERE If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! 1.9 [REFLECTION] You Are Not Alone Liturgy - Isaiah 43:1-7
13/01/2022 Duración: 13minIn our gatherings this weekend, we took time before jumping back into the Sermon on the Mount to reflect on and respond to the last few weeks. Sometimes we can feel alone in whatever we're going through, whether it's the deep pain of life not being what we thought it would be or experiencing a season of great joy in the midst of everyone else's chaos. We hope that this liturgy serves as a reminder to everyone in our community that "you are not alone". 1.9 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 9) - Matthew 6:1-4
10/01/2022 Duración: 33minJason Miller - Jesus tells us to give in secret, without "trumpeting" the gift or letting one hand know what the other is doing. Why does giving in secret matter? And what do we do with the apparent contradiction between this teaching and his instruction in chapter 5 to let people see our good deeds? 12.19 [TEACHING] Advent (wk 4) - Hope and Being Human
21/12/2021 Duración: 29minJason Miller - When things are hard, like they are right now, we find all kinds of ways to try to escape. Some of those paths are more destructive than others, but they all take us further away from hope. If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! 12.12 [CONVERSATION] Advent (wk 3) - Christian Hope and the Beautiful Resistance
13/12/2021 Duración: 52minJason Miller and Daniel Bannoura - If Advent is a time to explore the meaning of hope in the face of dark realities, we should talk about injustice. Daniel Bannoura is a Palestinian Christian and a member of our SBCC family who shared with us about the experience of violence and injustice in his homeland and the ways he seeks hope. 12.5 [CONVERSATION] Advent (wk 2) - Christian Hope and Climate Change
06/12/2021 Duración: 55minJason Miller and Jim Stump - If Advent is a time to explore the meaning of hope in the face of dark realities, we should talk about one of the most difficult things we're facing in this era: climate change. Jim Stump is the Vice President of Programs at Biologos, an organization that explores the intersection between science and Christian faith. He joined us for a conversation about science and faith, creation care and climate change, and hope in the face of daunting challenges. To learn more about Biologos, head to their website for a rich archive of resources from theologians, scientists, and other thought leaders. Jim also hosts Biologos' podcast, The Language of God, and we highly recommend it. You'll also hear a brief conversation at the beginning of the episode with Andrea Cramer, Executive Director of Neighbor to Neighbor, explaining how our Christmas offering will support the work they're doing to welcome refugees arriving in our area. 11.21 [TEACHING] Thanksgiving?
23/11/2021 Duración: 28minThanksgiving doesn't exactly show up on the church calendar, but it does have a place for us. This week we look at the pattern throughout scripture of God asking God's people to remember experiences of goodness with physical, tangible markers. 09/11/2021 Duración: 38minJason Miller- When Jesus speaks to people in abusive situations and tells them to turn the other cheek, is he prescribing passive acceptance? Or is he teaching something more subversive? If you're a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we'd love to hear from you! 01/11/2021 Duración: 42minBeth Graybill - Jesus warns us about taking oaths, and instead, challenges us to tell the truth. Why would he make this kind of comparison? And what makes it so hard for us to tell the truth? If you’re a part of the growing digital SBCC community, we’d love to hear from you! 10.24 [VISION] A different kind of conversation about church and giving
27/10/2021 Duración: 01h05minJason Miller - We're taking a break from our series on the Sermon on the Mount to have a candid conversation about church and giving. This is a teaching probably unlike ones you've heard before about church and money, and it includes a bit of a mythbuster on tithing and the local church. It includes reference at the end to a work of art called "Tethered Sky" by Robert and Shana Parkeharrison. If you'd like to see the image, it's easily found through a web search. 10.17 [VISION] SBCC‘s future home, part 2
19/10/2021 Duración: 10minJason Miller - In September, we began a process of communal discernment and feedback as we prepare for the end of our current lease at Studebaker 112 and consider some new possibilities for where we'll call home. Our lead pastor, Jason, took some time in this week's gatherings to report back to the community the feedback we've heard, and to let you know where things stand.

10.17 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 4) - Matthew 5:27-32
19/10/2021 Duración: 25minJason Miller - Jesus warns against lust and divorce. Are these matters of purity, or is something deeper going on?
-
10.10 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 4) - Matthew 5:17-24
11/10/2021 Duración: 36minJason Miller - As Jesus begins to give us pictures of the life of God in the sermon on the mount, he takes the prohibition against murder and stretches it to include a condemnation of anger. Why does he do that? Is this just a heavy burden, or a new possibility?
-
10.3 [TEACHING] The Sermon on the Mount (wk 3) - Matthew 5:13-16
04/10/2021 Duración: 38minJason Miller - Right after telling people that the kingdom of God is theirs, regardless of any aspect of their circumstance, Jesus speaks of being salt and light. What could these images mean for us, and what purpose do they serve?

9.26 [VISION] SBCC and the Future Possibilities of Where We Call Home
30/09/2021 Duración: 45minJason Miller - This week we opened up an important conversation about the place SBCC calls home. We moved into Studebaker 112 in 2017 as renters, and while we have loved our home and flourished here, we've also begun evaluating the wisdom of renting versus owning. In this episode, you'll hear us talk about those questions and share a possibility that we've been exploring that would allow us to own a building. As you listen, you'll notice that we shared some visual resources during the gathering to help illustrate the possibilites we're considering. If you'd like access to a video version of the presentation that includes those resources, email us at info@southbendcitychurch.com and we'll share the link. We also invited feedback on this conversation, and we'd love to hear from you. You can email the same address with any thoughts, concerns, hopes, or questions you have.

22/09/2021 Duración: 34minJason Miller - We're beginning a new focus on Jesus' sermon on the mount, the picture of the kingdom of God that he teaches in Matthew 5-7. This week we explore the second half of the blessings, or Beatitudes, that begin the teaching.
