Our guest tonight is Denise Cullen, Executive Director of GRASP. GRASP stands for Grief Recovery After a Substance Passing. GRASP is a support group for people who have lost a loved one as a result of drug use. The GRASP book is called When a Child Dies From Drugs.

Our guest tonight is Michael Benibgui PhD who is currently a psychologist at the Center for Optimal Living and Project Director at Services for the Under Served and who in the past has been Clinical Director at GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis). We will be discussing his research and work with substance use and harm reduction in the LGBT community and his research on the Physiological Impacts Of Homophobia.

Renowned addictions expert Stanton Peele joins us for a year in review episode. We have covered a huge amount of ground with many brilliant people and we want to thank them all. Starting next week we will move to a less intense format of one half hour show per week, thus freeing up a lot of time to move on to new adventures.

Our guest tonight is Susan Collins Ph.D. of the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences who will be talking to us about her research on wet housing. Her studies show that homeless alcoholics who are allowed to drink in wet housing significantly reduce their alcohol consumption when compared to homeless alcoholics living on the streets. Moreover wet housing costs the city only a fraction of what it costs for alcoholics to live on the streets.

Our first guest is Jenifer Talley PhD who teaches courses in substance abuse treatment with a focus on harm reduction at The New School University.   Our second guest, who wishes to remain anonymous, will discuss underground needle exchange programs in Texas where possession of a syringe is a crime.

This second edition is not merely an update of the first--it is a whole new book.   Our second guest is Gabrielle Glaser who will be talking about her forthcoming book Uncorked which explores the history of women and alcohol in America and discusses why AA can be such a bad fit for women drinkers.

The number of drug overdose deaths has more than tripled in the US since 1990. More than 100 people die of a drug overdose in the US every day. This increase was not caused by illegal street drugs--the number of deaths from heroin overdose remains relatively constant. The majority of drug overdose deaths in America today are cause by prescription painkillers. Sales of prescription painkillers in the US have tripled since 1999--paralleling the tripling of drug overdose deaths. Project Lazarus in North Carolina is fighting these drug overdose deaths with overdose prevention kits and naloxone, and they are succeeding in turning the tide. Our guests tonight are Project Lazarus workers Fred Wells Brason II and Nabarun Dasgupta who will fill us in on what is happening.
