Since they actually install and maintain the physical networking links for DoIT and the surrounding Madison area, they told us about fiber optics, undersea cables, and even laser beams that get the 1s and 0s where they need to go.

She seems overly excited about being ready in case bad things happen, but that's what she's supposed to be doing, apparently!

    We were intending to talk about the lighting, sound, and video technology that works behind-the-scenes for performing arts, but we mainly stuck to the first because we had a studio full of lighting people. Tom Steer from Electronic Theatre Controls soothed us with tales about installing dimmers in far-flung regions of the world, and Jon Miner, Sasha Aranow, and Bob Plankers from DoIT told us all about their hijinks with lighting instruments and controls. It may sound a bit overly-theatrical, but if you listen carefully, you can find ways to reduce your electric bill and extend the life of your incandescent lamps! Just in time for our program on green technology coming up next week.
