This parable might not be mainly about repentance and forgiveness but of wholeness. What if we focus on the older son, the one who gets overlooked?

Why do we continually harm one another? How can we explain repeated tragedy? These things are not caused by God, but we must turn to God for help in changing our own minds and the minds of others in our community to uproot violent ideologies. But sometimes we must simply weep with others without trying to figure out why heartbreak has happened.

Jesus looks down the scope of history and laments all the ways we desecrate holy places, the earth, one another.

There is an infinite distance between reading God's Word in Scripture and experiencing God's love in Jesus.

Advent promises joy and mercy, but first there must be repentance and judgement. When we will not, cannot, change our ways, God will find the way home to us so that we may greet the coming of Christmas and redemption.

Just as we are returning to the beginning of things, we are invited to look at the very end of them.
