  • GIDEON: FROM FEARFUL TO FEARLESS - Audio

    25/01/2015 Duración: 1897h00s

It’s been five years since we had to put our two Golden Retrievers down. There are a lot of things about them that I don’t miss. I don’t miss picking up after them. I don’t miss how they smell when they came in from the rain. I don’t miss them howling at sirens. But I would be lying if I told you I didn’t miss them. Almost every day for ten years I took Barney and Abby for a walk. I got so used to it that I still take that walk, though it’s no longer a daily thing. And there are times when I’m on that walk when I really miss having them with me. To be honest, I especially miss walking Abby, even though in the long run she caused me far more grief than Barney did. While Abby was a handful, she was also fearless. There were a number of times on our walks when we would run into stray dogs or menacing-looking strangers or even on one occasion a coyote, and Abby never gave an inch. Barney didn’t either, but that’s because – li

  • MOSES: FROM LAWBREAKER TO LAWGIVER - Audio

He is one of the biggest stars in the biblical galaxy. Moses is his name. He is the author of the first five books of the Bible – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. He led the people of Israel to freedom after 400 years of slavery to the Egyptians. He performed great miracles, turning water into blood and parting the Red Sea among them. He is the great lawgiver, giving us the Ten Commandments and hundreds of other laws that have shaped the morals of cultures all over the world, including our own.

  • ABRAHAM: FROM DOUBTFUL TO FAITHFUL - Audio

    11/01/2015 Duración: 1955h00s

The movie “Unbroken” came out on Christmas Day, a movie about a remarkable man named Louis Zamperini who died last July at the age of 97. The best-selling book that the movie is based on highlights three themes of Louis’ life – survival, resilience and redemption. Louis was serving as a bombardier during World War 2 when his plane crashed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, killing eight of the eleven crewmen on board. A few weeks later, another of the crew members died from his injuries. But Louis and the plane’s pilot hung on, despite a lack of food and water. Their raft got shot up by a Japanese fighter plane, sharks attacked them time and again, huge storms flung their raft around like a toy, but they still survived for 47 days before they were finally rescued. Oh, and it turns out they were rescued by the Japanese military, who promptly threw them in the brig.

“THE TRADITIONAL CONCERT: THE JESUS OF HANDEL’S MESSIAH” A Traditional Christmas December 28, 2014 Cornerstone Community Church It is undoubtedly one of the most famous pieces of music ever written, and it has become a Christmas tradition. It’s simply called “Messiah,” composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741. Even if you’ve never had the privilege of attending a full performance of “Messiah,” you’ve surely heard the “Hallelujah Chorus” at some time in your life, which is the best-known section of the oratorio. And even if you’ve never heard “Messiah,” if you’re a Bible reader then you know the words to the piece since the words are the words of the Bible.

  • THE TRADITIONAL CELEBRATION: HOW TO KEEP CHRISTMAS WELL - Audio

    25/12/2014 Duración: 1112h00s

In the first stanza of Charles Dickens’ classic story, A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge didn’t have much enthusiasm for Christmas. “If I could work my will,” said Scrooge indignantly, “every idiot who goes about with ‘Merry Christmas’ on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart.” Scrooge was a bit of a grump, wouldn’t you agree? But after being visited by the ghost of his former partner, Jacob Marley, and the three spirits of Christmas, Scrooge becomes a changed man. To the Ghost of Christmas Future, he promises, “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” And he did. The final paragraphs of A Christmas Carol report that Scrooge “knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge.”

  • THE TRADITIONAL DATE: WHY IS CHRISTMAS ON DECEMBER 25th? - Audio

    05/12/2014 Duración: 1907h00s

“THE TRADITIONAL DATE: WHY IS CHRISTMAS ON DECEMBER 25th?” It’s the most popular Christmas song of the last 100 years – “White Christmas.” Written by Irving Berlin and first sung by Bing Crosby, it’s a song most all of us recognize almost instantly: “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I used to know.” I grew up in Minnesota, and every time I heard that song come on the radio my first thought was, “Well what other kind of Christmas is there? How can it be Christmas if it isn’t a white Christmas?” Then in 1979 I moved to California and I discovered that I was perfectly happy to celebrate a green Christmas. Whether the trees out the window are evergreens covered in snow or palm trees gleaming in the sun, Christmas is still Christmas.

It was one of the worst children’s shows ever to grace American television, and yet this last May Lionsgate signed a deal to bring it back to the big screen sometime next year – the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.” It debuted in 1993, and some version of the Power Rangers has been on children’s television pretty much ever since. The plot, if you can call it that, is this – five high schoolers in the fictional California community of Angel Grove are selected by a being named Zordon to save the world from the evil plans of the aptly named Rita Repulsa. And to help them accomplish their task, Zordon enables the five teens to transform themselves as needed into the Power Rangers, complete with superhuman abilities. And if you ever watched the show, you remember the crew’s signature battle cry: “It’s morphin time!”

  • WHEN YOU NEED WHAT YOU DON’T HAVE: I SHALL NOT WANT - Audio

    29/06/2014 Duración: 1649h00s

For our 17th anniversary – which is now 17 years ago – we went on the first cruise of our lives to the Western Caribbean. One amenity cruise ships are famous for, and which we particularly enjoyed, was the food. There was more food available than the 3,000 of us on board could ever hope to eat in our lives. I am a breakfast-food lover, and when I got in line in the mornings to get breakfast, my eyes got as big as saucers because I liked to eat almost everything I saw, from the cereal to the rolls to the eggs to the pancakes to the French toast to the fruit to the bacon to the sausage. But after a day or two on the ship I learned how important it is to restrain yourself at breakfast, to make sure you don’t eat too much. Why? Because you want to be hungry for lunch.

  • WHEN YOU NEED HELP: THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD - Audio

    22/06/2014 Duración: 1716h00s

I don’t know if you have ever noticed this before, but it strikes me that we males of the species don’t like to ask for help. When we were toddlers and some well-meaning adult picked us up to help us go down the stairs, we threw a hissy fit and insisted on walking back up the stairs so we could walk back down the stairs by ourselves. When we passed from boyhood to manhood we took a vow never to ask for directions no matter how lost we are, and never to call a repairman to fix anything around the house, because we are men and we can do it ourselves. To say we are fiercely independent is an understatement; in our minds, a man is someone who will never admit he needs help.

  • LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON: MAKING CHARACTER COUNT - Audio

    16/06/2014 Duración: 1767h00s

I first gave the message I’m about to share with you in 1997. At that time our oldest daughter was 10, our son was 7, and our youngest daughter was 5. Now they are grown up. We still have some influence on them, but they are pretty much their own people now, as they should be. I’m giving this message all over again in part because it’s fun to tell stories about the kids when they were much younger; I am quite sure they are very eager for me to tell these stories to you all over. But mostly I’m giving you this message again because now – 17 years later – I’ve had a chance to see that what I told you back then is as true as it ever was.
