  • JESUS HEARS A YOU: THE DIFFERENCE OUR PRAYERS CAN MAKE - Audio

    06/12/2009 Duración: 1962h00s

Dr. Seuss has had an impact on most of our lives through the years. Some of the first books many of us had read to us and some of the first books we ever read ourselves were books that sprang from the fertile imagination of Dr. Seuss. Last year a movie was made of his 1954 story called "Horton Hears A Who." Let me give you a quick synopsis of the plot before we watch a short clip. ...

  • CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS WITH A PURPOSE - Audio

    29/11/2009 Duración: 1790h00s

"It's the most wonderful time of the year," says the song, and in many ways it is. If you're a child you're looking forward to opening your presents on Christmas Day. If you're a student you're looking forward to a two week break from school. If you work for a high tech company, you're looking forward to two weeks of unpaid mandatory shut down. If you're a wife and a mom, you're looking forward to battling the crowds to shop for Christmas presents for your kids, your husband, your parents, your in-laws and, just in case your husband forgets, for yourself. Then there are the work parties, the neighborhood parties, the school parties, and the family parties

  • GIVING THANKS ON PURPOSE - Audio

    25/11/2009 Duración: 1308h00s

One of my favorite family memories is from the times when my three kids were in kindergarten. The first public performance of each of their lives came at Thanksgiving, when all the parents would gather at school on the day before Thanksgiving to watch our kids sing songs and recite poems and dress up like pilgrims. And then when the program was over we would sit down with our kids in those tiny kindergarten chairs and eat crackers and drink juice as our way of celebrating Thanksgiving together. ...

  • PARENTING ON PURPOSE - Audio

    15/11/2009 Duración: 1910h00s

A father was reading his four-year-old son James a Bible story as he was getting him ready for bed. Reading from the Book of Genesis the dad read this: "A man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee from the city, but Lot's wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt." The dad could tell that his youngster was troubled by the account so he asked him what he thought. James replied, "I was just wondering … what happened to the flea?" Kids hear things differently sometimes, don't they? A mother was sitting next to her young daughter at church one Sunday morning. During the sermon the minister looked up toward God and said, "Dear Lord, without you we are but dust." At that moment the preschool daughter leaned over to her mom and quite loudly asked this question: "Mom, what is butt dust?" ...

  • STAYING MARRIED ON PURPOSE - Audio

    08/11/2009 Duración: 1988h00s

It was your stereotypical chick-flick, "Sleepless In Seattle" starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. But let's be honest. Even though there were no explosions, no car chases and no fights, most of us still enjoyed the movie. To this day something inside me gets a little mushy when I hear the movie's signature song, "When I Fall In Love." Do you remember how that song goes? "When I fall in love, it will be forever. Or I'll never fall in love. In a restless world like this is, love is ended before it's begun. And too many moonlight kisses seem to cool in the warmth of the sun. When I give my heart, it will be completely, or I'll never give my heart. And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too, is when I fall in love with you."

  • YOU WERE MADE FOR A MISSION - Audio

    01/11/2009 Duración: 1610h00s

Jesus' most familiar story is surely the parable of the prodigal son found in Luke 15. It is actually the third of three stories Jesus told to make this point: people are spiritually lost, and it is our job to leave everything else behind to go out and find them. Let me read you the first two stories Jesus told that day:

  • YOU WERE SHAPED FOR SERVING GOD - Audio

    25/10/2009 Duración: 1793h00s

As evidence of just how popular Elvis Presley was and continues to be, consider this fact. For the first month after its release, Elvis' album of greatest hits was the number one album in the nation, more than 25 years after Elvis Presley died! Yet in spite of his enormous success, Elvis was, according to his closest friends, an unfulfilled and unhappy man. He died of obesity and drug dependency at the age of 42. His wife, Priscilla, said this about her husband in an interview: "Elvis never came to terms with who he was meant to be or what his purpose in life was. He thought he was here for a reason, maybe to preach, maybe to serve, maybe to save, maybe to care for people. That agonizing desire was always with him and he knew he wasn't fulfilling it. So he'd go on stage and he wouldn't have to think about it." Elvis Presley never did figure out what on earth he was here for. ...

  • YOU WERE CREATED TO BECOME LIKE CHRIST - Audio

    18/10/2009 Duración: 2334h00s

We are spending 40 days discovering God's purposes for our lives, so let's do a quick review. In Week One we learned that we were planned for God's pleasure. Our first purpose is to get to know and love God. That's called "worship." Next we discovered we were formed for God's family. God wants us to learn to love other people and to commit ourselves to his family, and the Bible calls that "fellowship."

  • You Were Planned For Gods Pleasure - Audio

    04/10/2009 Duración: 2039h00s

Mike Rokyo reported this true story in the Chicago Tribune. A man named Bill Mallory traveled to India to discover the purpose of life. He didn't find the answer there. After returning home, he noticed a sign at a Chevron gas station that said, 'As you travel, ask us.' So every time he pulled into a Chevron station, he would look up at the sign and say to the attendant, "I'm a traveler. I'd like to ask you a question. What is the purpose of life?" These were the answers he got. The first guy said, "Sorry. I'm new here." The second guy said, "I don't remember anything in the manual about that." Most people just gave him a blank stare. One day Mallory got a phone call from Chevron Customer Relations. He said, "We understand you've been asking our dealers questions and getting unsatisfactory answers." The man suggested that he write out his question and send it to Chevron Corporate with a self-addressed stamped envelope. So Bill Mallory wrote, "What is the purpose of life?" and sent it to Chevron. A

  • What On Earth Am I Here For? - Audio

    27/09/2009 Duración: 2051h00s

This morning, as we get started in our 40 Days of Purpose spiritual growth experience, we're going to look at three of life's most important questions: 1) The question of existence, Why am I alive? 2) The question of significance, Does my life matter? and 3) The question of intention, What is my purpose? I realize these are pretty big questions. These aren't the kind of questions we're used to talking about with each other. But the truth is that it's not just philosophers who wonder about these questions. The most popular television show in the world is "House," and if you've ever watched it you know that these are exactly the kind of questions that get raised fairly frequently on the show. If you've never watched the show, Dr. Gregory House is a brilliant doctor, but an extremely difficult human being. In one episode called "One Day, One Room" House is having a conversation with his patient, a young woman named Eve; here's their exchange: House: "If you believe in eternity, then life is

  • 40 Days of Purpose of Purpose - Kick Off! - Audio

    20/09/2009 Duración: 1305h00s

Kick-off or 40 Days of Purpose... The Bible is very clear about this - you are not an accident. God had a purpose for creating you. In fact, God even had a plan for where and when you would be born. In Acts 17:26 the Bible says, "From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live."

  • Who's The Boss: What Does God Think About Our Government? - Audio

    06/09/2009 Duración: 2080h00s

It"s been ten months since our last national election, and seven months since President Obama"s inauguration, but emotions still seem to run fairly high when the subject of politics comes up in casual conversation. We are agitated, it seems, by the debate over health care reform. The national debt is a major concern. The war in Afghanistan continues to trouble us all. And we wonder, as followers of Jesus, what God thinks of all of this. What does God think of our government? What does God think of the Iranian government? What does he think of the North Korean government or the Chinese government or the Russian government or the Israeli government? Or does God not really care about any of the world"s governments" is that something that really doesn"t matter to God? ....

  • The Sweet Spot: The Satisfaction of Living as A Sacrifice - Audio

    30/08/2009 Duración: 2080h00s

I've been trying to play some tennis with my son this summer. I've found that I can only use the cardio equipment at the gym so long before I get so bored that I just can't do it anymore, but I've always found exercise more enjoyable when it involved chasing a ball. It turns out that in tennis you're actually supposed to hit the ball more than chase it, but that's the part I'm working on, the whole “hitting the ball” part. But every once in awhile I happen to hit the ball just right. I remember when I played baseball as a kid we learned about the “sweet spot” on the bat, the fat part of the bat where you want to hit the ball to get maximum power. And it seems to work somewhat the same way in tennis; for me there seems to be a spot on the racquet that feels just right when I hit the ball. When I hit the ball on the sweet spot, the ball doesn't go over the fence, it doesn't go into the net, and it doesn't pop up in the air' when I hit the ball on the sweet spot the ball actuall

  • You've Been Elected: What Does It Mean To Be Chosen By God? - Audio

    23/08/2009 Duración: 2192h00s

He is known in basketball circles as "the chosen one." His name is Lebron James, and he is without doubt a freakishly talented athlete. Let me show you just one clip from a game a few years ago where Lebron dunked over another extraordinary athlete named Kevin Garnett in a playoff game, causing the commentators to momentarily lose their minds: [YouTube clip of Lebron James "with no regard for human life”] That's Lebron James the "chosen one." Have you ever wondered what it might feel like to be referred to as "the chosen one"? It would certainly be a compliment; I imagine I would feel quite honored to be called "the chosen one." And I imagine I might feel a bit overwhelmed with peoples' expectations if people were to point at me and say, "There he is; he's the chosen one." It's not just in athletics that we hear the phrase. In the "Terminator" movies John Connor is referred to time and again as "the chosen one," as the one person who has been chosen by fate to save humanity. When we

  • Winning Big: It Helps To Have God On Your Side - Audio

    16/08/2009 Duración: 1808h00s

If you've ever “chosen up teams,” you know that the most important pick is almost always the first pick. In our neighborhood, the only important pick was the first pick, no matter what sport we were playing. If you wanted to win, you had to have Chris Earl on your team. Chris wasn't any bigger than any of us, but in every way he was better than any of us. He could outrun us, out-pitch us, out-hit us and out-catch us. The only time one of Chris Earl's teams would lose in any sport was when Chris just got bored with winning....

  • Spirit-Filled: The Life You've Always Wanted - Audio

    09/08/2009 Duración: 1929h00s

In the last few months the world has lost a number of stars, including people like Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and Steve McNair. It has been nearly impossible not to read about the lives these celebrities lived; their stories have been recited in every cable news show, in every magazine, and on every website. And while I won't be so presumptuous as to suggest that I knew what any one of those stars was really like, what I read about them more often than not left me feeling very sad. They were each great performers; they were outstanding professionals. But from much of what I read, which I am aware is not the whole truth, I found myself feeling a bit of grief over who they were as people. In many ways they lived the kind of lives so many of us want. They were extraordinary at what they did; they accumulated significant fortunes; they enjoyed considerable fame. And yet for the most part I would not say any of them lived the life you or I or anyone has always wanted.

  • Conflicted: If We're Made Right, Why Do We Still Do Wrong? - Audio

    02/08/2009 Duración: 1774h00s

A prominent psychologist contends that the predominant emotion of the average American male is disappointment. And while that conclusion came out of a survey of men, I have a hunch that it applies to all of us to one degree or another. In fact, I suspect that we who follow Jesus may feel even more disappointment than most people. After all, we tell people that Jesus has changed our lives. We tell people that Jesus has come into our lives and has given us power to live the kind of lives we've always wanted. As follower of Jesus we have committed ourselves to some fairly high moral standards. We are committed to purity, to integrity, to generosity, to patience, to forgiveness, and to faithfulness. We believe you should love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. We believe we have a moral responsibility to feed the hungry and care for the poor.

  • Righteous Kill: What Has To Die For Us To Live? - Audio

    26/07/2009 Duración: 1745h00s

I have the utmost respect for the men and women who serve in our armed forces, but I don't think I would make a very good soldier. There are a number of reasons for that, but perhaps the most important one is that I think I would have a hard time killing someone. I've only shot a gun once in my life. I was 20 years old and living in Alberta at the time, and I was visiting a member of my brother's church who was a farmer. He took me out to his farm and invited me to try my hand at shooting the gophers that were wrecking his cropland. I saw a fair number of gophers that day, and I fired a fair number of shots. But unless a gopher died laughing, I had absolutely no success in helping this farmer with his gopher problem. I am a lousy shot, and I would, I am sure, make a lousy soldier....
