Brief Audio reflection for Advent 3: Year A. While we wait for Christmas, it’s useful to remember that the symbol of our faith isn’t Santa Claus. It’s not candy canes or mistletoe. It is the cross. Advent reminds us that we live in expectation of eternal happiness. But we must travel the way of the cross to get there. John the Baptist lived in expectation. Like John, we find fulfillment when we find what God expects of us. Ask him and ask him again. Seek his will every day. As God’s expectations become clearer, take a really hard, honest look at the way you live. Then get to work putting your expectations in line with his… getting your life right with God. And what better time to do it than now. This is Advent. This is the season of great expectations.

Brief Audio Reflection on Matthew 24:36-44; The First Sunday of Advent, Year A. Appropriately, on this first Sunday of our liturgical year, Jesus gives us a wake-up call. He knows we get distracted. He knows we get bored. He knows we are human. He is too. Every organ, every cell, every atom of his body is human. But he is also divine… the channel of God’s love for us. And before we can live in that love, we must be awake to it, open to it, actively seeking it, body, mind, soul and spirit. On this First Sunday of Advent, we retrace our first stirrings of faith, our first commitment to Christ. We are reminded to keep awake… awake to the brevity of earthly life, awake to the promise of eternal life, awake to the love of God… not a bad resolution for Advent. Keep awake!

Brief Audio on Luke 21: 5-19. The 26th Sunday after Pentecost, Proper 28, Year C. Our Christian life is more than a marathon; it can also be a treacherous obstacle course. Expect to be tripped. Expect to fall. Endurance means more than just chugging along. We must regularly pick ourselves up and get back in the race. For endurance we look not only to the cross, we look to the Resurrection. That’s because we know how this story ends… not in tragedy, but in triumph. That is the source of our strength, our hope, our joy. As Paul instructs us in Hebrews 12: Lets us run with perseverance…looking to Jesus…who endured the cross… so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. Thank you, Jesus. In your love we rejoice and endure.
