Born in Hungary, Sara Barta moved to London as a young child, and has been a proud Camden resident ever since. Having started writing music at the age of 7 and performed across the borough and the Royal Albert Hall, Sara has just been booked to perform at the Sziget Festival in Hungary, and is currently in the studio working on her first album. This piece was inspired by the fictional TV character Mrs Brown, which is set in Finglas, in North Dublin. A Finglas resident wonders what the people there think of the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution (which gives equal right to life to the foetus as to the pregnant woman), which is the subject of a referendum on 25th May. Taking a trip down memory lane and reviewing the hardships that putting the foetal hearbeat ahead of women’s health caused in Finglas (and all over Ireland). This audio was originally developed for a Speaking of IMELDA performance in Ireland in 2016. The referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment to the Irish constitution and clear the way for permitting abortion up to 12 weeks takes place on 25th May. In a recent survey, Camden was one of three London boroughs named as one of the best places to live in the country. The study looked at areas across England and ranked them on factors such as economic growth, sustainability and happiness. In this first episode of Talking Shop, Marian, Freddy and Violet discuss whether they agree with the findings. Healthwatch Camden plays an important part in ensuring that service providers hear what sort of health care local people want. Young people are the focus of a social media campaign that Healthwatch is running from 23rd-27th April. Based on a joint project with 6th form students in Camden, videos available on Instagram from 23rd April, will explore the three top health issues for school students. Lindi Maqhubela of Healthwatch Camden talked to Camden Community Radio about how the campaign will run, why it matters and about how Sixth form students created content and designed the campaign. Camden-based multi-media artist Sally Buchanan doesn’t necessarily know what her projects are going to be about, but always knows that they are going to happen. Not surprising then that her contribution to the FLUX Exhibition – this week in the Parade Ground of Chelsea College of the Arts – is called ‘The Inevitable Installation’. Sally talked to Camden Community Radio while she was still on a high from the (not quite finished) work on her sculpture which she hopes will draw people into a space that suggests another world, another dimension. Consisting of ten cubes, each a different colour and constructed with scaffolding and organza that people can walk through or view from outside, the installation plays with shape and colour as overlaps transpose colours and convey different hues. Licence2skill is a pilot project of meaningful engagement for people who suffer with mental health illness, specifically depression, anxiety and stress. The project will be a service people can use to help cope with mental health issues and manage conditions before reaching crisis point and as a tool to prevent mental health deterioration. So says Racheal Ofori when she discussed her new play ‘So Many Reasons’ with CCRadi’s Lavinia Butt. ‘So Many Reasons’ headlined this year’s Feminist Festival, Calm Down Dear, at the Camden People’s Theatre. A comedy about youth development, marriage, sex and gender roles told through the experiences of a young British-Ghanaian woman. Racheal’s play received 5-star reviews and then went touring the UK. The Camden Town Shed was one of the first examples of the Men’s Shed movement from Australia to arrive in the UK. It was started by local man Mike Jenn and is based in the Maiden Lane Community Centre. It is a den of ingenuity and creativity and source of fulfillment for many of the men (and women) it serves.
