On Sunday, Pastor Jake preached week 2 in our 3-week miniseries “Church is _______.” Church is more than a hobby, an activity, or a social club. It has to be. And since what something is determines how we act in response to that thing, defining what exactly the church is seems like a pretty important endeavor. Last week, Pastor Jake taught on the idea that church is family. But really it’s more than that. It goes way beyond family. Church is bigger than you. It’s bigger than a hobby. It’s bigger than something you do on Sunday mornings. Church is mission.

When you’re born, you’re born into a physical family.

Legacy is a pretty intense word. How do we go about “leaving a lasting legacy”? It sounds impossible! Nothing would bring him greater joy. No other legacy matters for us either. And we’re not only talking about the kids in your house. You don’t have to have kids to leave a legacy, but you do have to be a father or mother. You have to intentionally reach out to those younger in the faith to become their spiritual mother or father. But how do we do this? How do we leave behindkids that walk in the truth? The Apostle John gives us a few keys to that. If we’re going to accomplish this, 1) we’ll have to realize that the spiritual far outweighs the physical. There are so many lies being told that it’s hard to figure out the truth a lot of times. The fact that more people believe in some idea than don’t has no bearing on whether that idea is true or not. God will not be bullied. The truth is important not just for an increase in knowledge on your part or some level jump in the faith. It’s important because of the lies! You have to do more than just know the truth. You have to guard it, because the devil’s tactic is not to know you well enough to deceive you. It’s to throw so many lies at you that you lose track of what’s true; so many different paths that you forget what path you were on to begin with. There is no such thing as new truth. Truth has a source. The path has a beginning. The key is not to study the new truths, it’s to abide in the Old Truth. Fighting for faith is not just about talking, but doing. Most of us struggle getting our actions to line up with our words. We commit and say we want to fight for faith, but we don’t do the work. The key to our actions lining up with our words is discipline. Discipline is just choosing between what you want now and what you want most. It’s choosing best over good. So the question is what do we need to do now to accomplish what we want most (to persevere and fight for faith)? Jude gives us 3 Godly habits in verses 20-21. They’re not novel or sexy. They’re basic. The main things are the plain things. 1) Build yourself up in the Faith. In other words, spend time (habitual, daily time) in the Word of God. 2) Pray in the Holy Spirit. Spend real time praying. Pray continually. And listen! 3) Wait for Jesus’ return. Make the hope we have in Jesus the center of your life.
