Josh uses readily available internet satellite images to study land, terrain, cover, and topography. He also uses this information to determine bedding areas, food plot and stand locations. As hunters, we don't consider poachers to be hunters.  Sure the activities may look similar to the non-hunter, but there are vast differences in the approach of taking game.  The obvious difference, is that a hunter does the hunt legally, the poacher illegally. But how do law abiding hunters keep the ill intent from messing up our clean image? You probably can't completely fix that problem, but the Enforcement Division can sure separate the good from the bad.  Lt David Gregory of the Vermont State Fish and Game is all too familiar with poachers, but he says that they don't in anyway represent the vast majority of hunters.  David shares some of his epic arrests on this episode and we talk in detail about a family of poachers with a rap sheet dating back to the 1990s that got pinched once again in 2017.  The activity seems to be taught, not instinctive. So away Joni went on her bucket list hunts, only to find out later after more evaluation and testing, that her life expectancy was longer than two years due to medical advancements for her particular form of a rare auto-immune disease. Today, Joni is still fighting a daily battle against the elements, as her condition can often turn her hands paper white when exposed to cold temperatures. Treestand safety is a hot topic. And it should be. Studies show that treestand accidents are by far the leader in serious injury or death to a hunter.  There have been some major advancements in safety though the years compared to the days when the hunter would limb climb a tree into a wooden built treestands.  The harness has also come a long way since the early days, the attachment straps aren't as limiting, devices like the Life Line now keep us attached to the tree, but suspension trauma, should you slip, is still a major concern. Hunting in multiple semi-local states can be a huge advantage to a deer hunter, especially if some states hold longer seasons.  Henry Moncrief uses this to his advantage as he hunts Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine.  These states, despite their reputation for holding smaller racked bucks compared to the midwest for example, lower deer densities, and difficult hunting terrain, Henry seems to have found a formula for hunting and killing the bigger, if not the biggest bucks in these woods no matter which state he hunts.  Henry changes his strategies based on the weather patterns that he northeast can deliver, loves to read hunting pressure, and says that scent control to the point of smelling like nothing is a key to his success. Why do we hunt?  Why are we hunters? What makes us tick? For many reasons, these are questions that we should probably ask ourselves as hunters.  These are also the questions that Robbie Kroger has set out to answer as part of his Blood Origins project.  Through interviews with hunters and his own experiences, Robbie has discovered that we all have a connection in our roots to hunting, passed along from generation to generation, and that often times the connection to hunting is deeper than that.  This is what we might consider our hunting heritage. And if you are familiar with this concept, you know what it is. It has a smell, a feel, you breathe it in and it feels amazing.  It is the freedom that hunting provides.
