The Georgia football team, along with two of our podcast co-hosts (Tony & Will) traveled out to Oxford this past weekend to see what the Rebels of Mississippi were up to. Tony & Will joined forces with the fine folks of Ole Miss to WIN the tailgate, however, on the field, UGA was not treated as kindly by Hugh Freeze and the Rebels. UGA lost 45-14 and it could've been much, much worse. Nevertheless, time to re-group and focus on Tennessee as they roll into Sanford Stadium on October 1st. In this episode, Will, Tony & Scott try to figure out what happened with Georgia as they barely defeated FCS team, Nicholls State 26-24 at Sanford Stadium on 09/10/16. Interesting, there were similar parallels between this game and the 2001 Tennessee/Georgia game, a game made famous from Larry Munson's legendary call, titled "The Hob-Nailed Boot" game. The game play was not similar, but what was similar was the final score, 26-24 and that is not a very common final score in football. But the fact that both games featured a coach in his first season (Mark Richt in 2001 & Kirby Smart in 2016), a freshman starting QB (David Greene in 2001 & Jacob Eason in 2016) and a trusted RB to seal the victory (Verron Haynes caught the winning TD pass in 2001 & Nick Chubb helped the Dawgs run out the clock to preserve the victory in 2016). Saturday night in front of a record crowd of over 75,000 for the Chick Fil A kickoff Classic, Georgia proved that the beginning of the Kirby Smart era would be one to remember. Many questions were answered. Nick Chubb is back to full strength with a strong 200+ yard performance including a 55 harder that sealed the deal. Jacob Eason looks to be as good as advertised and the defense stepped up when needed, most notably when in the 3rd quarter Roquan Smith forced UNC RB Elijah Hood out of bounds in the end zone for a momentum shifting safety.
