Our natural tendency is to what revenge on our enemies - but what we fail to see is that we too are the enemy! If we choose to love our enemy we can stop the hatred and cause real change to happen. We need to realise that while we were still enemies, God chose to be reconciled with us - and look at the change in ourselves and our hearts as a result. We need to be careful with this passage, because if we do not read it in the context of the whole Sermon On The Mount, it appears that Jesus is asking us NOT to resist evil.
