  • Beer is a Conversation: Aaron Heary

    14/01/2020 Duración: 56min

This week we catch up with Gage Roads’ Chief Strategy Officer Aaron Heary. Midway through last year we had a conversation with Gage Roads co-founder John Hoedemaker and Aaron about the origins and history of the publicly listed brewery. It was a really well received episode and one that received an unusually high response at the time, with many of you saying how interested you were to hear that history which hadn’t really been discussed much. In that chat we filled the episode just talking about the brewery’s history and didn’t delve much into where Gage Roads is now and where it’s going as it has just celebrated 15 years in business. This time we learn how the business is adapting to the changing beer market, including the soon to open Atomic Beer Project in Sydney. It’s a wide ranging chat that covers everything from the recent release of a reimagining of its first beer incorporating cryo hops that weren’t available when the brewery launched, what he has learned about brand and business and how he is app

  • Beer is a Conversation: Adam Trippe Smith

    07/01/2020 Duración: 01h20min

We kick off our tenth year of covering the Australian brewing industry through a podcast with Adam Trippe Smith. Adam joined the brewing industry after a background in corporate finance, corporate development and M&A with Ernst & Young, Diageo and APN News & Media. In 2007 he co-founded McLaren Vale Brewing Company, and after leaving went on to found Australia’s first keg lease company Kegstar in 2012. After growing that business he oversaw a staged sale to supply-chain logistics company Brambles before leaving Kegstar in 2018. After a break, he recently re-entered the brewing industry founding Konvoy Kegs, a keg rental business that competes with his former creation, while at the same time - together with some illustrious co-founders - he is soon to officially launch another brewery, White Bay Beer Company in Sydney. Through all of this, Adam was heavily involved in establishing what is now the Independent Brewers Association. This is a great episode that is rich in industry insight and advice for those

  • Beer is a Conversation: Brad Rogers

    24/12/2019 Duración: 01h17min

Welcome to a special Beer is a Conversation, our last for 2019. A live chat with Stone & Wood co-founder Brad Rogers recorded at Brisbane’s My Beer Dealer. It’s fair to say that Brad is a legend. If it wasn’t just for creating Pacific Ale, arguably the most influential new beer of the last twenty years, Brad would still be revered as a brewer. This is a wonderful, long chat with Brad about so much that is going on in the beer word at the moment, but also about the beers that he is creating at his Stone & Wood side project Forest for the Trees. As with the previous Live from My Beer Dealer, this was a rare podcast recorded with beer in hand. Regular listeners will know that we avoid the sip and discuss style podcast, and so parts of the chat about the specific beers have been edited out for the podcast listeners benefit. Thanks to Antoinette, Matt and Les at My Beer Dealer for hosting us - and congratulations on your first year. We will be recording more live chats there, so please let us know how the live

  • Breaking News: Balter announces sale to CUB

    04/12/2019 Duración: 36min

Balter Brewing Co has been acquired by Carlton and United Breweries as Australia’s big brewers engage in another wave of craft acquisitions. The sale, announced today for an undisclosed sum, sees the Currumbin-based brewery join 4 Pines and Pirate Life in the existing CUB stable. If the Asahi acquisition of CUB is allowed to go ahead, they also join Green Beacon which was acquired by Asahi back in August. Balter was launched in 2016 and its beers have since been the recipient of a host of awards under the stewardship of head brewer Scott Hargrave, a former brewer at Byron Bay and Stone & Wood. Balter brewed 4 million litres of beer in 2018. Founders include Bede Durbidge, Josh Kerr, Sean Ronan, Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, brand director Stirling Howland and CEO Ant Macdonald, along with Hargrave. All will be remaining with the business following sale completion.  Read more.

  • Beer is a Conversation: Dr Axel Gohler

    03/12/2019 Duración: 43min

This week is our last chat from BrauBeviale where we learn a lot about history and brewing traditions and a little bit about malt with Dr Axel Gohler from German maltster Bestmalz. So much has happened in the craft brewing industry in a short time in Australia with new breweries, beer styles and business models, that sometimes it can be easy to forget that these things have come and gone before, especially in a country with such strong brewing traditions as Germany. Dr Gohler talks about his family's 7 generation history in the brewing industry, firstly in brewing in Berlin and then in malting. We also hear of the development of Bestmalz from a period post Wold War 2 when roasted barley was used to make coffee but that the German commitment to beer culture saw malting recover and the recent growth of craft beer worldwide has seen it flourish. • Beer is a Conversation: Yakima Chief Hops

    26/11/2019 Duración: 46min

This week we chat hops with the team at Yakima Chief Hops. We're joined by Ryan Hopkins - Chief Sales Officer, Patrick Smith - Vice President Loftus Ranches and Joe Catron - Operations Manager, Yakima Chief Ranches. A few weeks ago Matt was in Nuremberg to check out BrauBeviale. While there he was struck with the presence that US hop growers had. Hop forward US style beers hardly have a presence in the very traditional German market. Was this presence an investment in the future of hops, trying to create a market for US hops and US styles in Germany, or a response to an already growing market? Enjoy the conversation. • Beer is a Conversation: Ben Kraus

    19/11/2019 Duración: 36min

Last week Matt was in Nuremberg to check out the mother of all brewing trade shows, BrauBeviale, and while there he ran into Bridge Road Brewers founder Ben Kraus who is currently a few months into a 12 month hiatus from the brewery which he and his family are spending in his partner’s native Austria. We learn how Ben, who has very much been central to Bridge Road’s brand, vision and personality, set the business up in a way that allowed him to step away from the business so completely. We discuss his reasons for taking a break from the business, and whether the break from the day-to-day hubbub of the beer word has given him a new perspective on the Australian industry. We also learn what beers he has been drinking in Austria. It’s a fun chat with someone who has been an enduring guest on the podcast. Enjoy the conversation. • Beer is a Conversation: Chuck Hahn

    12/11/2019 Duración: 51min

Beer is a Conversation is our weekly sit down with some of the people who make the beer industry the interesting and dynamic thing that it is and through these conversations we dig a little deeper into the stories behind the business of beer and brewing. Over the last few months we have jumped into the wayback machine and talked about the early days of what we now call craft beer. This has been more through accident than design...but this week we have another one for you. About six months ago Matt was having a chat with Chuck Hahn and the conversation came around to changing beer palates and Chuck happened to mention that his original intention for Hahn Premium Lager was to brew and market a pilsner. He said that his early testing told him that the beer he proposed was too challenging for the 1988 beer palate that he was targeting, not to mention they didn’t know what a pilsner was. Matt floated the idea of borrowing a homebrew kit and doing a batch with him. Chuck seemed to like the idea and organised to

  • Beer is a Conversation Bonus: Darren Gamache

    05/11/2019 Duración: 39min

As part of the 2019 northern hemisphere hop harvest we joined Bintani as they travelled to the US to make their final selections from the Autumn crops. We headed north from Portland, Oregon to the Yakima Valley in Washington State just after the competition of the harvest and were granted a rare insight into the wonderful world of hop breeding and development and the process by which the harvested fresh hops are assessed and then selected before being processing. Virgil Gamache Farms, more popularly known as VGF is a leading hop grower in Toppenish in the Yakima Valley. The Gamache family began farming back in 1913 on what was then called Sunshine Ranch. The first crops were wheat, corn, potatoes, apples grapes and alfalfa. When Prohibition ended in 1932 the family set straight to growing hops but it wasn’t until the late 1990’s when a chance discovery of some independently growing ‘wild’ hops were rescued from destruction. In the spirit of an old Wireless Radiola Series, that hop grew up to become Amarillo.
