Whilst in hospital, Craig contracted an infection. In order to save his life, he had his leg amputated. Craig continues to recover but occasionally plays hockey thanks to an adapted prosthetic leg. But, born with a club foot, he struggled to keep up in a category where many of the men he raced against had one leg amputated below the knee and used a prosthetic blade.
