  • Episode 30: 17030 Borne by a Wind

    12/02/2021 Duración: 01h01min

Boston-born composer Sid Richardson releases Borne by a Wind. In this debut portrait album, Richardson explores the point of intersection between music and literature in gritty and original ways, opening with Red Wind (2017), a collaboration with African-American experimentalist poet and National Book Award-winner Nathaniel Mackey that features Mackey as the narrator in excerpts from his poetry collection Blue Fasa alongside the Deviant Septet. Earlier works on the album include There is no sleep so deep (2016), written for and performed by pianist Conrad Tao; LUNE (2015), written for and performed by violinist Lilit Hartunian; and Astrolabe (2014), recorded by the Da Capo Chamber Players. • Episode 50: 17050 Balakirev: Symphony No. 2 in D minor

    10/02/2021 Duración: 40min

Mily Balakirev began work on his Symphony No. 2 in D minor in 1900, but did not complete the work until 1908. The premiere of the symphony was conducted by Russian composer Sergei Liapunov, a student of Balakirev, in St. Petersburg in 1909. Another performance was held in Paris soon afterward, but the piece has since become one of the lesser-known symphonies in the repertoire. • Episode 49: 17049 Shostakovich: Symphony No. 14, Op. 135

    09/02/2021 Duración: 53min

The Symphony No. 14, Op. 135 by Dmitri Shostakovich was completed in the spring of 1969 and was premiered later that year. It is a work for soprano, bass, and a small string orchestra with percussion, consisting of eleven linked settings of poems by four authors. Most of the poems deal with the theme of death, particularly that of unjust or early death. They were set in Russian, although two other versions of the work exist with the texts all back-translated from Russian either into their original languages or into German. The symphony is dedicated to Benjamin Britten (who gave the UK premiere the following year at Aldeburgh). • Episode 17: 16017 TAPEREBÁ

    08/02/2021 Duración: 08min

This is a 1-track sample of this album. Described by critics as “beyond category, to use Duke Ellington’s signature compliment” (All About Jazz), Japanese marimba extraordinaire Mika Stoltzman brings her wealth of experience to her latest “Mikarimba” album, TAPEREBÁ. Vibrant and bursting with flavor (just like the Brazilian fruit from which the album derives its title), the jazzy TAPEREBÁ features performances by Stoltzman and a circle of legendary fellow artists. With over 25 Grammy Awards shared between the members on this record, a memorable listening experience is practically guaranteed. • Episode 16: 16016 DAWN BREAKS

    08/02/2021 Duración: 13min

This is a 1-track sample of this album. Maija Hynninen — composer and sound artist — works in concert music, electronic instrument design, and multidisciplinary performances. The essence of her music builds on the unique moments where the parameters of this world are slightly altered to allow a glimpse of another reality to be present. It can be a moment where the timbre of purely acoustical writing gives surprising results or when electronics project sound into another domain, space, and reality. Her work has been described as “ethereal” and “highly skillful,” that builds into “a strongly unifying musical arc” (Helsingin Sanomat), “fascinating experience,” and with “strong association to nature” (Hufvudstadsbladet). • Episode 15: 16015 Carollo: Symphony No. 3

    08/02/2021 Duración: 06min

This is a 1-track sample of this album. Quite surprisingly, Symphony No. 3 had humble beginnings. Back in the late 2000s, composer John A. Carollo connected on MySpace with English soprano Sharon Selman, who was deeply involved in the preservation of trees and forests. She suggested that Carollo use the poetry of William Blake as a starting point to create a piece about nature. Carollo didn't think twice; and a song cycle named Awake Humanity to Nature’s Beauty! was composed, then reworked, resulting in two different instrumentations. • Episode 47: 17047 Bennett: Victory at Sea

    07/02/2021 Duración: 01h17min

Victory at Sea is a documentary television series about warfare in general during World War II, and naval warfare in particular, as well as the use of industry in warfare. It was originally broadcast by NBC in the United States in 1952–1953. It was condensed into a film released in 1954. Excerpts from the music soundtrack, by Richard Rodgers and Robert Russell Bennett, were re-recorded for record albums. The original TV broadcasts comprised 26 half-hour segments—Sunday afternoons at 3pm (EST) in most markets—starting on October 26, 1952, and ending on May 3, 1953. The series, which won an Emmy award in 1954 as "best public affairs program", played an important part in establishing historic "compilation" documentaries as a viable television genre. • Episode 46: 17046 Donizetti: Elvida

    06/02/2021 Duración: 01h12min

Elvida is a melodrama or opera in one act by Gaetano Donizetti. Giovanni Schmidt wrote the Italian libretto. The opera was written as a pièce d'occasion for the birthday of Queen Maria of the Two Sicilies. The choice of subject matter was no doubt intended as an elegant acknowledgment of the Queen's Spanish ancestry. Donizetti received a little financial reward for the work and, as a result, put the minimum of effort into its composition. Elvida was first performed on 6 July 1826 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, but it "made little impression on the audience". This opera was not performed again until 2004. • Episode 36: 17036 Uncovered 1

    05/02/2021 Duración: 01h24min

Catalyst Quartet poses, “Over the course of time there have been many overlooked artists in classical music. It is important to acknowledge that we have not yet heard the whole story. Composers like Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, and Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson have contributed beautifully crafted work to the repertoire but are not widely celebrated because quality recordings and performances of their music are rare or non-existent. With our next recording project, we are helping to change this unfortunate reality.” Purchase the music (without talk) at: http://www.classicalsavings.com/store/p1211/Uncovered_1.html Your purchase helps to support our show! • Episode 1: 16001 MUSICAL IMAGES FOR CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, Vol. 1

    04/02/2021 Duración: 05min

This is a 1-track sample of this album. When Mark John McEncroe is asked what kind of music he composes, his reply invariably is "I don’t know, I just write it." It's a clever answer: at first glance, it is humble and modest, but it also reveals a considerable degree of naturalness, authenticity, and intuition. The same can be said for McEncroe's music, which is unapologetically evocative and driven by sentiment, with long lyrical lines and pleasant harmonies. The neo-Romantic style of orchestration which McEncroe intuitively employs fits his ideas perfectly. • Episode 202: 15202 Sirens

    04/02/2021 Duración: 54min

Acclaimed composer Craig Safan's newest album, Sirens. Inspired by the classic tales of Homer's The Odyssey. The tracks that make up Sirens were enhanced by live players as well as sonic elements Safan recorded while exploring the landmarks of Sicily, the Aeolian Islands, and environs. This album is a compelling and intriguing musical work from start to finish that transports the listener into the world of Odysseus and the Sirens. • Episode 201: 15201 Dreamers

    04/02/2021 Duración: 05min

This is a 1-track sample of this album. In 2016, composer and pianist Jeffrey Jacob conducted interviews with children of illegal immigrants, whose plight ended up inspiring the pianist's fifth symphony. Remarkably for a contemporary composition, the work is quite condensed timewise; nevertheless, it packs the whole gamut of human sentiment, with the movements titled I. Lagrimas [Tears], II. Fear; Grace, and III. Separation, Grief; Resolution, Triumph. Purchase the music (without talk) at: http://www.classicalsavings.com/store/p1238/Dreamers.html Your purchase helps to support our show! This is a 1-track sample of this album. On TO ONE, Croatian-born Lela Kaplowitz delivers a collection of songs that expressively hearken back to the singer/songwriter era of the 1970s, reviving the spirit of such ground-breaking artists as Carole King, Laura Nyro, and Roberta Flack. Kaplowitz, who has been lauded by jazz vocal legend Sheila Jordan as “an extremely talented vocalist” and Bobby McFerrin as having a “wonderful voice,” presents a nuanced mélange of pop, soul, jazz, and even folk music on TO ONE.
