Sinopsis

The Dangerous & Delicate Balancing Act Between Your Dream Job and Your Day Job Formerly titled Real Person | Real Needs This podcast chronicles the journey of a 30-something who is trying to discover his purpose in life and make his dreams a reality. Geoff Desiato is a husband and father of two, with the responsibility to provide for his family. He's a proud high-school graduate who has worked full-time since he was 17 years old. But after 13 years of working for “The Man,” and being told that he needed to go back to school if he wanted to be successful, Geoff experienced a pre-mid-life crisis. Like many people, Geoff had passions and dreams but not the ability or confidence to pursue them. For instance, he is an aspiring actor and semi-professional singer. With the support of his wife, Geoff decided it was time to find a suitable career that would allow him to pursue his dreams while still providing for his family and doing something he loved. So Geoff set out on his entrepreneurial journey by diving into the Real Estate industry. Upon getting his first taste of self-employment, Geoff became fascinated with entrepreneurship, and has since dedicated his time and energy to helping people who feel trapped in their day jobs discover how they are uniquely positioned to change the world! This podcast is for people who struggle with balancing their day job while pursuing their dream job. Formerly titled Real Person | Real Needs For fans of Jon Acuff, Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, as well as the podcasts Millennial and This American Life

  • 023: Being in the Business of Second Chances w/ Karin Wolfle of The Shabby Attic

    23/05/2016 Duración: 30min

#RealPersonRealNeeds #ShabbyAttic #SecondChances In this episode, I sit down with Karin Wolfle, entrepreneur/artist behind The Shabby Attic in Lansdale, PA. Having left behind a career in the mental health field, Karin decided to pursue her love of fine arts by starting her own business. She soon realized that being an entrepreneur requires a little bit of "crazy," and whole lot more elbow grease. While she admittedly (and candidly) has been through many trials personally and professionally, she hopes to use both her degrees in fine arts, and in psychology, to not only bring new life and purpose to old furniture, but by inspiring others with her story of overcoming adversity and making the most of second chances. You can follow Karin and see her work at www.facebook.com/TheShabbyAttic or on Instagram @ theshabbyatticlady

  • 021: Pursuing Your Dream Means Saying Goodbye to Lesser Pursuits

    09/05/2016 Duración: 26min

"Close some doors today. Not because of pride, incapacity or arrogance, but simply because they lead you nowhere." — Paulo Coelho #RealPersonRealNeeds #SayGoodbye2LesserPursuits I am good at saying HELLO. I like to start things, but oftentimes, I start too many things. At one point in my life, I was a document management associate, aspiring musician, writer, recording artist, aspiring actor, radio host, audio editor, graphic designer, and church admin, ALL AT THE SAME TIME! Sure, I could get things done, and to the average person, they seemed to be done well. But there came a time in my life when I realized that in order to do something I loved, and do it to the best of my ability, I would need to say goodbye to lesser pursuits.

  • 020: “What Are You WAITING FOR?! JUST DO IT!” | Prioritization vs. Procrastination

    26/04/2016 Duración: 25min

#RealPersonRealNeeds #Podcast “Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.” ― Pablo Picasso Everyone has the desire to do something big - maybe a dream to be realized. Everyone also has the same 24-hour day and yet one of the biggest excuses people make is that they don't have the time to pursue their dream and still keep their day job. Dreams require hard work. They require a dedication of our "3 Ts," our time, talent, and maybe even our treasure. We are happy to use the "3 Ts" on things that have no positive or lasting effect in our own life or in the lives of others, but if we want to make our dreams a reality, we first need to get our priorities in order. First things first, WE NEED TO GET STARTED! • 019: Defy the Label | Don’t Be Defined by Other People’s Perception of You

    20/04/2016 Duración: 29min

#RealPersonRealNeeds   No one ever changed the world without first being labeled a ‘troublemaker.’ - Scott McLeod   It's a dangerous thing when you sacrifice parts of who you are in order to fit the label that society has placed on you and those like you. For instance, say the word "Realtor" and there is a definite picture that comes to mind. One that is used to define me even if I am nothing like those who proudly wear that label. For instance, I am very outspoken about my love and pursuit of the Arts and a lot of people don’t understand why I would talk about Theater and Real Estate together. They believe it reflects poorly on me as someone who makes a living in Real Estate to talk about my TRUE passion, as if Real Estate should be the only thing I think about. Most people want me to just be a Realtor, 24/7. That is what would make the masses comfortable. A neat and tidy box to put me in. But I will not be limited or defined by someone else's perception of who I am. I will always be Geoff Desi

  • 018: Strong Convictions | Making Enemies | Kicking Butt and Taking Names

    11/04/2016 Duración: 27min

"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." - Winston Churchill   Knowing what you stand for and believing in it wholeheartedly will no doubt cause friction in your relationships. Unfortunately, we live in a society that denigrates those who have firmly-held convictions, while celebrating unity and tolerance among those who have no original ideas or beliefs. Most of the time, it is easier to go along with the masses to keep your life free from confrontation. But there comes a time when a line must be drawn between right and wrong, and when that happens, enemies are inevitable.

  • 017: Helping Others Beats Helping Yourself…Every Time!

    29/03/2016 Duración: 23min

The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well. — Ralph Waldo Emerson In today's episode, we discuss the importance of shifting our focus off of our own needs and onto the needs of others. By doing this, we lighten our own burden of stress, worry, and anxiety, and the added benefit is that we are better-equipped to lighten the load of another person.

  • 015: “When I Grow Up…” | Apollo 13 | Peter Pan | And A Husky 10 Year Old |

    15/03/2016 Duración: 23min

I often say to people that I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. They laugh, I laugh, we laugh together. They tell me I'm funny. I deflect the praise and then graciously accept it in my slyly humble way. But in reality, I am DEAD serious. I truly believe that there should be a healthy bit of Peter Pan in all of us. And no, I don't mean the brand of peanut butter. I'm allergic to peanut butter so having a little bit of that "Peter Pan" in me would have my wife racing for my EpiPen®. I'm talking about the boy who could fly and refused to grow up. I don't mean we should be immature, but we should be willing to look up at the moon and think that we could one day walk on the face of it. The next time someone tells you to "grow up," take it as a compliment. You're never too old to learn and grow and realize your dream.

  • 014: Preparing for the Journey- Taking the Necessary Steps to be Ready for the “Next Step”

    07/03/2016 Duración: 25min

In this episode, we discuss how the next step in our journey may not be the final landing spot, but we still need to prepare ourselves for what we can learn and apply so that we are better prepared when the next opportunity comes along. With each step forward and each lesson learned, we are becoming better-equipped to do what we've been created to do when the time comes.

  • 013: How to Jump-start the “Next Chapter” of Your Life

    29/02/2016 Duración: 25min

In this episode, I discuss how silencing the noise around us and curling up with a good book (or three) can help you reclaim your sanity and jump-start the "next chapter" of your life.

  • 012: When You Dare to be Different, the Critics Will Come

    22/02/2016 Duración: 26min

“To avoid criticism say nothing, do nothing, be nothing.” ― Aristotle In my short time in Real Estate I have seen a lot of people who do things the same way that they have always been done. Mainly, because that is what they have been taught from the time they got their license by coaches and mentors with "years of industry experience." I however have tried to do things differently. But in so doing, I have found that my unique approach is not always well-received. All I have tried to put out there is that I do things differently. I am not concerned with which way is right and which way is wrong. Many people may like what I have to say or maybe not. My conviction is if I hate when I get sales calls or someone solicits at my home, then it would be hypocritical for me personally to do the same thing to others. That is why I have chosen a different path. And for that stance I am bound to get criticism, and that's okay.

  • 011: Finding Your Purpose Means Living With Purpose

    15/02/2016 Duración: 24min

We often romanticize what it means to "Find Your Purpose" as though it were something you can only hope to achieve in the unseen future. Unfortunately having this perspective often paralyzes us and leads us into hopelessness. It is better that we begin living with purpose in the everyday rather than daydream about some mystical "purpose" we've yet to grasp. Live deliberately, live intentionally. It is when we identify the purpose of the mundane that we are better equipped when we finally realize our dream. The long road to purpose and meaning can only be trod with purposeful steps. • 010: Running Your Race Well | Rethinking Retirement

    08/02/2016 Duración: 24min

Peyton Manning's career has been the focus of much media attention of late. Specifically whether or not he will decide to hang up his cleats now that he has won his second Super Bowl. In thinking about the fortunate position Manning finds himself, I am reminded that we also should be striving to "go out on top." Life is not just about arriving safely at death. We should not be counting down the years 'til we can live the good life in Florida. We should be using each day to position ourselves to the most good in the twilight of our life. I have been challenged to rethink the idea of "retirement" and look at how I invest now so that my final years on this earth are some of my most effective in changing the world. • 009: Tackling the 900lb. Gorilla of Self-Doubt

    01/02/2016 Duración: 26min

“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” ― Suzy Kassem In the world of sales, you are always taught various ways to overcome objections. But what if the objections that are impeding your progress are coming from within yourself? In this episode, I delve into the topic of overcoming our own objections to doing big things and changing the world. "I can't..." should be removed from our vocabulary. We need to transform our self-will so that "I can't" becomes "I MUST!" (I apologize in advance since I was sick when I recorded this. My voice gets weaker as the episode goes along and I take no responsibility for the noises coming from my nose. LOL! Hopefully it does not impede your ability to listen and grow!) • 008: What Do I Mean by “REAL NEEDS?”

    25/01/2016 Duración: 19min

In this episode, I follow up on the previous episode by talking about what is meant by "Real Needs." My business is just a platform for my message. That message is to build a community, a movement that is committed to putting other people's needs ahead of our own. Whether it's by donating funds to help children in the foster care system, helping build a home for the less-fortunate, or rescuing those who have been taking from their homes by human trafficking. I know this seems like a big job, but somebody has to do it. Why not me and you? Theme Music: Burned Out (Brandon Liew) / CC BY 4.0

  • 007: What Do I Mean by “REAL PERSON?”

    19/01/2016 Duración: 23min

In this episode, I vamp on the idea of putting the REAL in real person. Authenticity and truth are your greatest weapon and your strongest attribute when trying to differentiate yourself from the competition. But forced authenticity is the exact opposite of authenticity. Be Yourself and live with the consequences. I'd rather be myself and sleep at night, than be what other people perceive as the model of success and professionalism. • 006: Knowing Where You Came From to Get to Where You Are Going

    11/01/2016 Duración: 22min

“Know from whence you came. If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go.” - James Baldwin As we enter a new year, it is tempting to put the previous one in the rear-view mirror and never look back. In this episode, I discuss how it important that we not forget the journey that has brought us to where we are. In many ways, it can be our compass for the road ahead.   Theme Music: Burned Out (Brandon Liew) / CC BY 4.0

  • 005: The Two Most Important Days in a Person’s Life

    14/12/2015 Duración: 11min

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” ― Mark Twain In this quick little episode (recorded on my birthday), I take a look at this profound quote and meditate on how another year passed means another chance to put the life lessons learned into practice. At this time last year, I was about to jump into the unknown with both feet. And I am so glad that I did. This last year brought me face to face with some of the biggest challenges of my life, but it also brought out both flaws in my character that needed to be addressed, and courage that I didn't know I possessed. Ask yourself today, why was I born? If you don't know the answer to that question, then stop chasing every other vain pursuit in life (money, relationships, fame, etc.) and start the hunt of your life. The hunt for purpose.   Theme Music: Burned Out (Brandon Liew) / CC BY 4.0
