#cageclub: The Nicolas Cage Podcast

The Humanity Bureau has been available in the U.K. for nearly a year, but we hadn’t tasted the forbidden fruit. We held out, waiting for its stateside release. Maybe we should have kept waiting. But every new Nicolas Cage movie is a treasure, so Mike and Joey brought in Lindsay Gibb of Winona Forever to talk about the dystopian future of a movie that appears to have the budget of a SyFy original.

When we first ran through #CageClub, we found ourselves unable to escape the town in Red Rock West. We've finally freed ourselves... only to revisit the town and find ourselves unable to leave all over again! Whether or not Looking Glass is a good movie or not is up for debate. What isn't up for debate is that it's loaded with Nicolas Cage, who seems to alternate between being mentally checked out and crazed. All we know is that in this Cage-starved climate we're in, any Cage is better than no Cage at all. On the one hand, you could argue that this movie is trying to be a combination of Psycho and Rear Window, minus all the good parts. On the other hand, in this movie, Nicolas Cage uses a dollar bill to clean his eyeglasses. Who could possibly argue with that?

Revisiting Vampire's Kiss, one of Nicolas Cage's best performances, is a treat. Join Joey, Mike, and Cara (of Wistful Thinking) as they discuss the insanity of this film, the intentional vs. unintentional confusing nature of plot points, the rampant sexism, the attractiveness (or unattractiveness) of Nicolas Cage (and David Hyde Pierce), whether or not this is an adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula (#BackdoorBingo), a great possibility for an upcoming art exhibit, and poor, poor, poor Alva. Mom and Dad is a movie we've been waiting to talk about for a long, long time. We had to bring in the big guns, which is why we called on Alamo Drafthouse programmer Greg MacLennan to discuss the greatest father/son moment in the history of film, Cage doing the hokey pokey, why we don't have more movies where Cage has a family, the mystery of the pajama kid, and (of course) the Sawzall. Do you (the) trust us to talk about The Trust again? We're headed back to Vegas, baby! (Again!) As we draw the curtains on 2017, Joey and Mike took some time to reflect on "the year that was" for Nicolas Cage. While there weren't as many movies released as we would have liked -- even though three would be a pretty remarkable number for most other actors -- we got three more strong Cage performances, a sequel to one of Cage's craziest movies of all-time, and a new contender to that title. Also, as we near Cage-A-Rama 2018 -- a two-day event honoring two sides of Cage -- Joey and Mike look back at the films being screened and pay tribute to Cage the Lover and Cage the Fighter.

Knowing the twist at the end of Matchstick Men doesn't make re-watching it any less enjoyable. Just take your shoes off, please.
